Epilators Are The Unsung Heroes Of DIY Hair Removal

Between waxing, sugaring, shaving, threading, and laser treatments, there’s certainly no shortage of ways to temporarily (or permanently) remove body hair, if that’s your preference. However, there’s one lesser-known method that’s poised to make a major comeback as we continue to make do with at-home beauty treatments: epilation.

Like voluminous hair and fuchsia lipstick, epilators were big in the ’80s. With longer-lasting results than razors, the hair removal method quickly appealed to people who were over ingrown hairs and pesky stubble. However, the rumours you’ve heard about it — mainly, that it hurts like a mother, especially the first time — are, based on my own experience as a longtime epilator, mostly true.

Epilators look like handheld whirling blades of death (I myself have demonstrated it over Zoom to the shock of my coworkers), but they basically worked as mechanised tweezers that move quickly to pull out unwanted hair on the face or body as you pass the device over your skin. However, similar to waxing, the more you do it, the less regrowth you’ll see over time. Ready to give one a spin? Ahead, seven devices to consider trying.

Philips Sanitelle Prestige

The slightly elongated handle helps you reach those hard-to-get spots, like the sides of your ankles, toes, or upper back.

Braun FaceSpa Pro 921 Facial Epilator Bronze

Peach fuzz and moustaches have nothing against this epilator, which also doubles up as a cleansing brush thanks to the multiple heads. It plucks out short, fine hairs, too.

Braun FaceSpa Pro 921 Facial Epilator Bronze, $, available at Boots

Panasonic ES-ED90-P Wet/Dry Epilator and Shaver

On top of offering various attachments for precision hair removal and electric shaving, this Panasonic pick also comes with a pedicure buffer to exfoliate your feet (something we could all use right now).

Braun Silk-épil 9 Wet and Dry Epilator

This is actually the epilator I use on myself. It has two speeds (I always use the faster setting to finish the task quickly), and a single full charge lasts for weeks.

Braun Silk-épil 9 Epilator – White/Rose Gold, $, available at Braun

Magnitone London PluckIt SuperGlide Mini Epilator

This tiny-but-mighty palm-sized epilator is great for throwing in a weekender bag, and has antibacterial properties to keep the device (and your hair follicles) germ free.

Braun Silk-épil 3 Epilator

This entry-level option from Braun has rave reviews — and the rounded shape makes removing underarm hair as simple as swiping on deodorant (albeit a bit more painful).

Braun Silk Epilator 3, $, available at Shavers Direct

Pursonic 2-Speed Rechargeable Epilator + Hairline Trimmer

You get not one, but two hair-removal devices. The first, a rechargeable epilator outfitted with 40 mini tweezers, and the second, a precision trimmer to shave peach fuzz or any unwanted facial hair.
