Iconic ’90s Hairstyles To Break Out For Zoom Halloween

With Halloween parties going virtual this year, we’re reframing our approach to shopping for the occasion. This year, the costume trends will be less about the head-to-toe looks (because the nature of Zoom makes pants and shoes irrelevant) and more about two key details: hair and makeup.

As it pertains to the former, you can’t go wrong channeling the decade with arguably the most iconic and recognisable hair: the ’90s. When you dress as a pop icon — 1998 Drew Barrymore with a fringe and daisies in her hair, an homage to Selena Quintanilla, or Lil’ Kim with her purple wig at the 1999 VMAs — you’ll be a shoo-in for the Best Costume Award. For a complete rundown on the best ’90s hairstyles to inspire your 2020 costume, scroll ahead.

There are so many ways to channel ’90s R&B legend Aaliyah, but the easiest would be to grab a white bandana and fashion it into a headband, then add small-frame sunglasses and a tracksuit hoodie.

Britney Spears

There’s not a ’90s trend report on the internet that would leave out Britney Spears. What you’ll need: a blonde wig with choppy layers, a crop top (bonus points for a belly-button ring), and a tube of lip gloss.

One of the biggest beauty influences of the early 1990s, Selena Quintanilla left a permanent mark on the music industry and the world. Her signature look — full bangs, a high updo, and a crisp red lip — is both easy to copy and identifiable through any computer screen.

Janet Jackson

Similar to an Aaliyah homage, the best Janet Jackson costume would include a thick white headband, but coupled with a protective braided hairstyle.

Lil’ Kim

When Lil’ Kim arrived at the 1999 VMAs wearing a bright purple wig and a matching seashell nipple cover, we knew the appearance would serve as costume inspiration for decades to come.

Drew Barrymore

Even if you’re not rocking a ’90s bob with baby bangs, you can find a wig, stick a daisy behind each ear, and finish the look with a dark berry lipstick, à la Drew Barrymore circa 1998.
