If the drab weather outside wasn’t enough to signal that autumn is around the corner, Jo Malone’s annual big launch is.

Always eagerly anticipated, the coveted brand captures the feeling of late summer rolling into the cooler season perfectly.

This year, they’re relaunching one of their bestsellers, English Pear & Freesia, Now and Forever.

It’s inspired by ‘orchards awash with golden sunshine’, combining the ‘sensuous freshness of just-ripe pears’ with bright white freesias.

The floral notes are gentle and not typical of a floral-heavy scent.

Pear is a note that often appears in autumnal fragrance launches, being a seasonal fruit that’s harvested around this time.

The cool, crisp fruitiness of pears – that isn’t too sweet (something the brand wanted to avoid) – fits perfectly in with the mood of the upcoming months.

English Pear & Freesia has been on the market for over a decade now, so the iconic scent is being rebottled and given extra attention.

Celine Roux, Jo Malone’s global head of fragrance, says the scent, when it was designed, was inspired by English orchards and poetry.

‘English Pear & Freesia is all about the enchanting appeal of an English orchard, right at the point that summer turns into autumn,’ she says.

‘We were inspired by the image of fruit trees laden with juicy, just-ripe pears, and also by the great English poet John Keats’s famous poem, To Autumn, which talks about ripe fruit and flowers at this magical and whimsical point of the year.’

It was brought in at a time when most fruity fragrance options were sharper and sweeter, and the brand wanted a more ‘comforting’ take on fruitiness, without a tart quality.

As well as the notes named on the bottle, Celine says: ‘In the back of the fragrance, the amber molecule and natural scent of patchouli add a touch of sensuality: nothing heavy, but enough to provide comfort.

‘There’s also a hint of a rose accord in the heart that makes it feel a bit like a modern chypre, combining fruit and flowers over a warm, comforting base.’

Summarising the feel of the fragrance, she says it’s: juicy, golden, and mellow.

It’s the epitome of autumn, bottled.

The limited edition collection will include the fragrance in a new elegant fluted glass bottle across all three sizes, a larger hand and body wash size than is usually available, and a home candle.

It might be the perfect time to discover, or rediscover, this memorable scent.
