Move aside low-waisted jeans, the ZigZag Parting is the latest 00s trend going through a revival.
Don’t believe us? Just ask Ariana Grande, who sported the classic Y2K look on a recent Instagram post.
She’s not the first celeb to be seen donning the zigzag part in recent months.
Model Bella Hadid was also seen rocking the trend in a snap she shared on Instagram earlier this year.
The hairstyle was popular in the late 90s and early 00s, which explains why it’s having a moment.
The Y2K – or early 00s – trend has been creeping back into the mainstream for the last few years.
Its resurgence, for the most part, is being led by Gen Z and accelerated by social media – particularly TikTok.
So far we’ve seen skinny eyebrows, low-rise jeans and ‘tramp stamps’ make a comeback, but the humble zigzag parting, donned by many a 90s icon like Britney and Mandy Moore, and even fictional faves like Buffy and Sabrina.
It’s a classic school picture day hairstyle and one that many had forgotten about.
As with any revival, but especially anything from the 00s, it’s a mixed bag.
While some millennials cringe at the thought of going through another decade of trucker hats and pencil-thin brows, others are drawn in by familiarity.
And with celebrities like the Hadids and Ari hopping on board, it’s not looking likely to slow down.
If this has unlocked a hidden memory for you, you’re not alone.
People are catching on, and they want in.
Thinking of hopping on the trend? Here’s a simple zigzag parting tutorial to try out this weekend, by @hldhairr on TikTok
- Part your hair where you want the zigzag parting to sit, either in the middle or on the side.
- Take a fine-toothed tail comb and drag it left to right over your parting, deciding whether you want a bigger, more defined pattern or a smaller zigzag.
- Pull your hair on either side to show the parting.
- Then, you can either gel it down and go for a slick, spiky bun look a la Bella Hadid, or keep it down like our 90s faves.
