AJ Pritchard had professional counselling to overcome his own ‘demons’ following his girlfriend Abbie Quinnen’s freak fire accident.
Abbie, 24, suffered third-degree burns after becoming engulfed in flames during an accident in January. She had been filming an Instagram video involving a wine bottle and flaming rope when the life hack went terribly wrong.
Former Strictly Come Dancing pro AJ, 27, has supported Abbie throughout her recovery but the magnitude of the accident and her injuries eventually took its toll on him.
Recalling one particularly heartbreaking moment, Abbie told the Daily Mail: ‘He was really bawling. Sort of howling. I’d never seen him like that.
‘He’d been so strong around me but he wasn’t coping at all. He couldn’t unsee what he’d seen. He had his own demons and needed help, too. He needed to see a therapist to talk it out and, finally, he agreed.’
Abbie detailed how seriously AJ, who she described as ‘very OCD’, took her recovery and made sure to lay out her 27 tablets every day, set timers to wake himself up every two hours in the night to clean her wounds and attend doctor’s appointments with her.
The couple were filming the life hack together at their London flat earlier this year when the fire broke out. AJ’s brother, former Love Island star Curtis Pritchard, was fortunately also at their apartment at the time and raced to help AJ put the flames out.
Abbie, a professional dancer, recalled: ‘I think my body went into shock. I felt just a bit of heat.
‘I didn’t know if I’d have my face back or if I’d be able to dance again. Performing is my whole life. Or if AJ would still love me. I thought, he’s never going to love me like this. I asked him, “Will you still love me?” I just didn’t know.’
Dance pro AJ previously spoke about how he reassured Abbie that he still loved her and would be there for recovery process.
The couple began dating in May 2018 and have been going strong since.
