Alec Baldwin seemed to defend his wife Hilaria Baldwin while calling out Gillian Anderson over her fluctuating accent – and then deleted his Twitter account.
The Baldwins have found themselves in the headlines for the last few months, way before they welcomed a surprise baby just six months after Hilaria, 37, gave birth to their son Eduardo.
In case you missed the whole bizarre drama, Hilaria was accused of pretending to be Spanish, after internet sleuths discovered not only was her real name Hilary, but she was born in Boston, rather than Spain, which is what her agency bio stated.
One of the key pieces of ‘evidence’ that went viral was a clip of Hilaria forgetting the English word for cucumber, with many asking why the yoga teacher sometimes spoke in a Spanish accent when she is American.
Another celeb with a constantly changing accent is Gillian Anderson, who baffled many Golden Globes viewers on Sunday night.
Gillian accepted the award for best supporting actress for playing Margaret Thatcher in The Crown in her American accent, a change from the British accent that we’re used to hearing in Sex Education and The Fall.
The 52-year-old was born in Chicago before growing up between London and Grand Rapids, Michigan, and now lives in London; the actress often shifts between her American and English accents.
This was amusing to Alec, 62, who tweeted about Gillian’s accent while seemingly alluding to his wife’s dialect.
He wrote: ‘Switching accents? That sounds… fascinating.’
However, it seems the 30 Rock star was hit by backlash from fans of Gillian, as he soon deleted his Twitter account and filmed a nearly 10-minute long Instagram video explaining why.
The actor said: ‘Wanted to post a quick video to say that I deactivated my Twitter account today…
‘I don’t want to drag other people into my debates, but I noticed that someone said this actress who I won’t mention had switched accents during the press for her show. I just wrote, “Oh, that’s interesting.”
‘And of course, you can’t do any irony on Twitter—you can’t do any irony in the United States anymore because the United States is such [an] uptight, stressed-out place and such an unpleasant place right now.
‘The person I was referring to is someone I am a huge fan of, and that comment was meant to illustrate the point that I find that the multicultural expressions of anyone, whatever country, language, music, food, clothing, art, any of it, are important to you, that’s your business.
‘I find that, of course, on Twitter – which is where all the a**holes in the United States and beyond go to get their advanced degrees in a**hole-iness, that I had used it as a news aggregator – and I suppose I will do my best to find other places that are similar in their news aggregation in real time and periodicals I like.’
Alec and Hilaria have enough to keep them busy, now that they have welcomed their sixth child.
The couple, who got married in 2012, confirmed this week that they have welcomed their daughter Lucia to the family.
They are already parents to Carmen, seven, Rafael, five, Leonardo, four, Romeo, two, and Eduardo, who was born in September 2020.
Alec is also dad to Ireland, 25, from his marriage to Kim Basinger.
