It’s been 20 years since Avril Lavigne released her debut album, Let Go, and we are feeling old.
The star was just 17 years old when she launched the 13-track record, which featured instant classics including Sk8er Boi and Complicated.
Now 37 and touring the world once again with her latest album Love Sux, the musician has been reflecting on the album that launched her to stardom.
Avril, who recently became engaged to fellow musician Mod Sun, took to social media on Saturday where she spoke about the ‘monumental impact’ Let Go has had on her – and millions of fans’ – lives.
She wrote: ‘I will never be able to fully explain not only how much this album meant to me, but the monumental impact it has had on my life.
‘It’s hard to try and comprehend how, 20 years later, the songs I wrote as a 17 year old would still resonate with people today.’
She recalled how Let Go ‘took me places I never in my wildest dreams could have ever expected,’ adding she is ‘thankful for it every single day’.
The I’m With You singer went on to thank everyone involved with creating the album, including LA Reid, who also helped launch the career of fellow Canadian teen icon Justin Bieber.
Addressing her fans directly, Avril said: ‘Last but certainly not least, thank YOU, to every single one of you who made a connection with this album and stayed with me since.
‘I say every night on stage how lucky I feel to be making music, touring and having as much fun as I do. I share this moment with all of you, because without you guys, these songs wouldn’t have reached the heights that they did.’
She went on to offer a ‘genuine, heartfelt thank you to anyone that ever listened to my music and stuck around.’
The punk princess signed off by writing: ‘Happy 20th Anniversary ‘Let Go’ and here’s to another 20 years.’
Her heartfelt post – which garnered over 74,000 likes on Facebook – was accompanied by old photos of the singer taken around the time Let Go was released.
They show a teenage Avril in her then-trademark style: poker-straight hair, a choker and army-style trousers.
Now, 20 years later, the icon is still making music and is preparing to marry fiance Mod, real name Derek Smith.
The pair announced their engagement in April, with Mod planning a romantic proposal in Paris.
Photographs of the moment showed Mod, in a leather jacket and trousers, dropping to one knee as his wife-to-be, also dressed in all-black, beamed down at him with the Eiffel Tower visible in the background.
Avril and her future husband fell in love while working on her latest album but were friends for years beforehand.
