Just when you thought you couldn’t be more psyched about the impending Barbie film, Ryan Gosling’s Ken sings an anguished song about being second best.
With only a few days until Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film reaches theatres globally, moviegoers have been treated to a sneak peek of the Hollywood star’s character spilling his heart out in a musical performance.
‘It doesn’t seem to matter what I do, I’m always number two,’ Ken sings. ‘No one knows how hard I try.’
‘Hey, check me out, I’m just Ken,’ he later adds, before ending the number by screaming: ‘I’ll see you on the Malibu beach!’
Unsurprisingly, the musical scene has sent fans into a meltdown, with one dramatically commenting: ‘I just fell to my knees in Walmart.’
‘Ryan Gosling has carried this movie from the first moment,’ another applauded.
While a third criticised: ‘YOU GUYS SHOULD HAVE KEPT THIS SCENE A SECRET!!!’
Barbie, which will be released in theatres on July 21, stars Margot Robbie as the pink-obsessed title character, as well as Ryan, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, and Dua Lipa.
The film follows Barbie as she leaves the utopian Barbieland and journeys to the “real world” with her boyfriend Ken, played by Ryan.
In the film’s primary trailer, the doll appears to be having a wonderful existence until things start to go wrong, such as losing her ability to glide down from her roof and discovering her distinctive arched feet have fallen flat.
Ryan defended his role in the Barbie film in May, stating, ‘If people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with.’
Speaking to British GQ, he continued: ‘It is funny… this kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken.
‘Like you ever thought about Ken before this? But suddenly, it’s like, “No, we’ve cared about Ken this whole time”. No, you didn’t. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never f***** with Ken. That’s the point.
‘If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told.’
Barbie is due for release globally on July 21.
