Maria Bakalova, the actress who played Borat’s daughter Tutar in Borat 2, has revealed how hard it was for her to deceive the babysitter she starred alongside.
The Bulgarian actress, 24, revealed she connected to Jeanise Jones while filming the sequel to Borat, and found it hard not to be honest about the fact she was reallt an actress.
Maria told The Los Angeles Times how close she and Jeanise, 62, had got: ‘I will probably always think of her as my godmother, a real hero and life coach.
‘She just wanted to help this girl become a strong woman. [We had a] real human connection from the very first day we met.’
Maria, who was tipped for an Oscar for her fearless performance alongside Sacha Baron Cohen, added that she called Jeanise on Thanksgiving.
She revealed: ‘I called her on Thanksgiving: It was my first American Thanksgiving and was also my best.
‘I was so happy to talk to her that I started to cry. When we were shooting, it was very hard for me, because I wanted to tell her not to worry about me.
‘She is a really good example of how important it is to be a good person and care about others.’
Following the release of Borat 2 in October, Jeanise had told The New York Post that she had felt ‘betrayed’ for believing Tutar’s problems were real.
She said: ‘I’m feeling like she’s from the Third World and that kind of stuff does happen where they sell women. I’m thinking this is for real so I felt kind of betrayed by it.’
While it looks like Maria and Jeanise have managed to save their friendship, fans also raised over $184,000 in just over two months for the babysitter – who lost her job of 32 years due to coronavirus – while Sacha himself donated $100,000 to the Oklahoma City community she is a part of.
