Captain America ‘set for return to MCU’ as Chris Evans tipped to make comeback as superhero

Captain America fans, get excited. It’s been claimed that the much-loved superhero could be making a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Yup, it’s been reported that Chris Evans is hotly tipped to be making a return as Captain America in upcoming Marvel projects and, boy, are so up for that.

According to Deadline, Evans is ‘near closing a deal’ with Marvel to return in the future as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in not one, but two future features.

While that might not be another Captain America installment, after the movie trilogy came to a close in 2016, Evans could be back in character for cameo appearances in other projects.

Think Robert Downey Jr’s recurring cameo in other Marvel franchises like Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Tony Stark took on a mentor-like role for Peter Parker – that’s the idea for Evans’ rumoured return.

Hey, we’ll take it.

Naturally, fans went wild for the news Captain America could be making a comeback to our screens and took to Twitter to call on Evans to give us all ‘what we want’.

‘@ChrisEvans please tell me your gonna return as captain America give the fans what we want. #marvel#CaptainAmerica#ChrisEvans,’ tweeted one fan.

‘I’m ready for more Chris Evans as Captain America,’ posted another while thirsting over a minute-long video of the star in action.

One more said: ‘Chris Evans returning as Captain America has me soooo thrilled.’

Others, however, expressed their love for the superhero, but weren’t so convinced bringing him back was the right decision, as they thought his story arc ended beautifully.

As well as the three Captain America movies – The First Avenger (2011), The Winter Soldier (2014) and Civil War (2016) – Rogers was a key figure in the Avengers series, last appearing in the fourth and final movie Endgame in 2019.

Endgame saw Rogers choose to remain in the past to live a life with Peggy Carter after returning the infinity stones to their proper lines. As for his superhero alter-ego Captain America, an elderly Rogers passed over his shield to Sam Wilson aka Falcon – signifying him choosing to hang up his boots.

‘Sounds like Chris Evans is coming back as Captain America. I think it’s pretty cool that he’s coming back, but I liked his character arc and how his story ended with Peggy Carter,’ wrote one fan on Twitter.

Another shared: ‘Only if he’s coming back for What If…?, but other than that, Steve’s story ended beautifully. It shouldn’t be messed with and I think Chris Evans would agree. Sam is Captain America now and we should celebrate that.’

With that, it had looked like Evans had bowed out of Marvel, and the actor admitted he ‘already misses’ playing Captain America in an interview last year.

He told Backstage: ‘I absolutely loved my time with Marvel, I already miss it.’

However, Evans did admit that he thinks it’s exciting he now has ‘complete freedom’ to pursue other creative opportunities – maybe now just with a little Captain America stint thrown in from time to time…
