Charli D’Amelio has become the first person to reach 100 million followers on TikTok.
The 16-year-old has been the most followed person on the social media platform since March, with fellow creator Addison Rae just behind her with 69.9 million followers.
She has also achieved the milestone in record time, having only first posted on TikTok in May 2019, nine months after the service became available under its current branding.
Reacting to the record, Charli tweeted: ‘100 MILLION PEOPLE SUPPORTING ME!! I TRULY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS REAL.’
Charli has become well known for her popular dance videos on the app, as well as being a former member of the collective group The Hype House, which also features many other TikTok stars.
Since then, she has branched out with the rest of her family to launch their own YouTube channel, in which they post regular vlogs.
Recently, Charli and her sister Dixie D’Amelio received backlash from fans after they posted a video on the family channel in which they sat down for a meal with their parents and fellow YouTuber James Charles.
Some viewers felt the sisters were ‘disrespectful’ when they reacted to some parts of the multi-course meal, which had been prepared by a personal chef, by making gagging noises and pulling faces.
Others also pointed out a particular moment where Charli, who at the time had 98.5 million followers, reflected on how she would love to reach the 100 million milestone.
She said: ‘Ugh, I wish I had, like, more time, because imagine if I hit 100 mil a year after hitting a mil.’
James then asked whether 95 million was ‘not enough’, to which Charli laughed: ‘Well, I was just, like, saying, like, even numbers.’
During an Instagram Live earlier in the week, Charli broke down in tears in response to the mean comments some had made online about the video.
She began: ‘Blatantly disrespecting the fact that I’m still a human is not okay.
‘You can hate on me for whatever I’ve done, but the fact that all of this is happening because of a misunderstanding, like, I just feel like that’s not okay.’
Charli continued: ‘And if this is the community that I’m in and the community that I put myself in, I don’t know if I want to do that anymore.’
James later came to the star’s defence, writing on Twitter: ‘This charli situation is NOT sitting right with me… 100m followers in one year & y’all expect her to know how to be a perfect role model?
‘Death threats because she’s a picky eater & made a joke about a milestone? 30+ year olds dragging someone half their age? Feels familiar.’
