Danny Cipriani opens up on fiancée losing their baby and ‘intense grief’ after Caroline Flack’s death

Danny Cipriani has opened up on the ‘challenging’ year he went through in 2020 which saw the loss of his baby as well as the death of ex-girlfriend Caroline Flack.

The rugby star, 33, revealed that he went through ‘intense’ grief at the start of last year, after Love Island presenter Caroline took her own life in February.

He told Sportsmail: ‘It was a challenging year. I was grieving for my friend and we had a week off, so I went to LA, then COVID hit.

‘I couldn’t get back and I was there for three months. It’s obviously a beautiful place to be but I hadn’t been there for three months before and I was going through that [grieving].

‘I think grieving happens in different stages. Mine was very intense. At different times, it comes and goes.

‘There are moments when you remember that person. You have to remember the happy times and I don’t think that ever disappears.’

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic also meant that the rugby season was on hold, and there was further heart-breaking news when Danny and his fiancée Victoria, 40, lost the baby they were expecting.

He revealed that he struggled to open up about his grief at the time as he felt he had to be strong for Victoria.

Danny explained: ‘During that period, when the season was stopped, we also lost a baby. I think, as the male, I had a delayed on-set of grief about that.

‘You try to pick your partner up and you don’t realise at the time the effect it has on you.

‘We went through that process together and we are really strong now. We’re in a really good position to start trying again and we’re happy about that.’

The couple, who got engaged in August, are planning to marry as soon as possible, with Danny becoming stepfather to Victoria’s two children, daughter Jade, 24, and son Kameron, 14.
