David Arquette was blown away when he met WWE legend ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage for the first time while filming Ready To Rumble.
The Hollywood star – who is a lifelong wrestling fan – appeared alongside a number of top stars including Sting, Goldberg and Diamond Dallas Page in the 2000 buddy comedy, and it was a dream come true for someone who grew up loving the business.
He exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘When I did Ready to Rumble, I was reading the script and on page eight it said, “Macho Man Randy Savage in a convenience store”.
‘I called my agent like, “Do you mean the REAL Macho Man?” They were like yeah, he’s gonna be in it. It was amazing to be able to meet him, just talk to him.’
As well as his skills in the ring, the late wrestling great was known for his iconic deep voice – which has been imitated by WWE fans for decades – and Arquette couldn’t resist a chance to hear it for himself.
He excitedly added: ‘I was like, where do you live “Macho Man” Randy Savage? I was like, “oh my God he really talks like that”! The intensity!
‘I was like a kid in a candy store. Wrestling, even when you get back into it, it reminds me of being a kid.’
The 49-year-old actor – who is returning to the Scream franchise for the upcoming fifth movie – has always been a fan of Savage, and fell in love with his valet Miss Elizabeth.
‘In studying all the old matches, I saw Macho Man and Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania III, I was like… wow. They were so talented,’ he revealed.
David – who has opened up about how the backlash to his infamous WCW World Heavyweight Championship win inspired his return to wrestling – also couldn’t believe his luck when he realised his wife Christina McLarty bears a certain resemblance to his childhood crush.
He said: ‘I started watching old Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth stuff, and it just occurred to me that I was in love with her as a kid.
‘She was my favourite, and my wife looks just like her!’
