Demi Lovato has opened up about her journey in fully embracing her sexuality as she looked back on her failed engagement to Max Ehrich.
The 28-year-old spoke candidly about how past experiences have helped her to understand her sexuality and find a ‘sense of relief’ about how she approaches relationships.
Speaking to Glamour magazine, the singer explained ‘started realizing how queer [she] really [is]’ as she continues to get older.
The Anyone singer then claimed that ending of her two-month engagement to Max was extremely eye-opening for her in terms of her sexuality.
‘This past year, I was engaged to a man and when it didn’t work, I was like, “This is a huge sign,”‘ Demi explained. ‘I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.’
Demi explained that she know how she identifies herself but it not set to share that with the world just yet.
She stated: ‘I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am.
‘I’m following my healers’ timeline, and I’m using this time to really study and educate myself on my journey and what I’m preparing to do.’
The singer added that many of her past intimate relationships also helped her realize that she was looking for something different in relationships.
The Cool For The Summer singer explained: ‘I hooked up with a girl and was like, “I like this a lot more.” It felt better. It felt right. Some of the guys I was hanging out with — when it would come time to be sexual or intimate, I would have this kind of visceral reaction. Like, “I just don’t want to put my mouth there.
‘It wasn’t even based on the person it was with. I just found myself really appreciating the friendships of those people more than the romance, and I didn’t want the romance from anybody of the opposite sex.’
Former Disney star Demi and Max had been together for seven months when they confirmed their split in September – two months after they announced their engagement in July.
Things then got a little messy, however, when Max claimed he’d found out about their split by reading the tabloids and then doubled down on his claims when a source close to Demi insisted she had made him aware of the engagement being called off.
Max had reached out to Demi on social media in the wake of their break up, telling the star he’ll love her ‘unconditionally’.
Both Demi and Max released songs inspired by their break-up, with Max dropping a track he penned about his romance with Demi.
Demi, meanwhile, leaked her own break up anthem titled Still Have Me, in which the lyrics include: ‘I’m a mess and I’m still broken, but I’m finding my way back / it feels like someone’s stolen all the light I ever had / I don’t have much but at least I still have me.’
