Ed Sheeran has made a rare public appearance to launch a guitar giveaway, during his break from music after becoming a father for the first time.
The musician, 29, marked two years of his partnership with Lowden, an acoustic guitar brand from Northern Ireland, to give away two signed guitars to his fans.
Ed has been keeping a low profile during his break from music, after his wife Cherry Seaborn gave birth to their daughter, Lyra, in September.
Appearing on YouTube to launch the giveaway, Ed revealed that he has one of the brand’s instruments in every room of his home.
He said: ‘I’ve actually got a Lowden guitar in every single room of the house… they’re scattered around, because it’s just nice to walk into a room and have a beautiful instrument there that you can pick up and play.’
The guitars two lucky fans will get to win will be given away at random via the comments on the YouTube video, and have both been used by Ed during recording sessions.
He said of the partnership: ‘It was important for the 13-year-old in me being able to get the quality of a Lowden guitar but also it not be an unachievable feat.
‘I personally think it’s better than anything else in its price bracket.’
Lowden Guitars began in 1961 when founder George Lowden began making the instruments with his boat builder father using fishing line for strings, before opening his first workshop in Bangor, Co Down, in 1977.
The guitars are now sold worldwide and have been played by stars including Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol and Eric Clapton.
The brand have upgraded some of the Sheeran by Lowden range, including adding Indian rosewood on four models, but George adds: ‘The guitars still feature hand touches, though.
‘We still carve the internal struts with Japanese chisels, for example, so there’s a kind of mix of high tech and traditional skills.’
Fans were over the moon to see Ed make a public appearance once more, since taking a break last year.
Ed had announced the birth of his child in September, telling his followers: ‘We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here.’
Two winners of the competition will be selected at random and announced via Sheeran by Lowden’s Instagram and online at www.sheeranguitars.com.
