Ed Sheeran has opened up on fatherhood and how it’s changed his perspective on music as he returns with his first solo single in four years, Bad Habits.
The singer and his wife Cherry Seaborn, 29, welcomed their daughter Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran in September 2020, during Ed’s hiatus from music.
He released his new single Bad Habits on Friday, and admits he is still learning how to juggle the two parts of his life at the same time.
He told KISS Breakfast with Jordan and Perri: ‘It feels good being back. I sort of feel because I have taken so much time off, I feel like I am re-breaking my career if that makes sense.
‘I feel like a new artist again but being a dad, there was just a different focus. I wasn’t focused on being a professional musician, I was focused on being a dad and now it’s finding the balance of doing both, but it’s amazing.
‘Its an amazing thing, your life changes and I personally think it’s for the better. I mean I’ve lost the spontaneity of the night out, that’s gone but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.’
The combination of becoming a father for the first time and turning 30 in the same year made Ed feel like he was a ‘proper adult’ for the first time – complete with the physical aches and pains that come with it.
He joked: ‘That was one thing that made me feel really old, I would multitask with her in my arms and then do stuff but I didn’t realise there’s a certain way to hold a baby that doesn’t pull your back out.
‘I had to have a proper deep tissue massage because I pulled my back from just holding her and doing stuff around the house and that was when I was like: “Oh my god, I’m a dad now.”’
Ed’s not like most other dads, however, as he is making sure Lyra follows in his music footsteps from birth by bringing her to the recording studio with him.

‘She’s been in the recording booth with me, asleep on my shoulder and stuff like that,’ he revealed. ‘It depends – she is now of an age where she is just out and about and awake but in the first two months they sleep like 21 hours a day.’
His new single Bad Habits signifies a new sound for Ed, but the musician has always been keen to keep his fans guessing when it comes to his new releases.
Ed explained: ‘I felt like when I did ‘x’, everyone expected me to put out The A Team again so I put out this song Sing which I did with Pharrell [Williams] and it kind of polarised my fanbase. They were like “Ooh, don’t know if we like this” but eventually it gets to the album and it all makes sense.
‘With ‘÷’, Thinking Out Loud had been so big, everyone expected me to put out something like Perfect but I wanted to put out Shape Of You and do something different.
‘So with this record, I’ve got all the songs that people are going to like on the album and I just wanted to put out a tune that would surprise people and make people talk.
‘I don’t want to put out a single and everyone goes: “Oh, cool, yeah.” I want people to go: “Oh my god have you heard it? It’s so different, I don’t like it” or “I do like it.” You have to come back with a bang to make people know that you’re back.’
As for the album, Ed promised that it would be arriving towards Autumn, revealing: ‘The name is on the Ipswich Town kit, that’s all I’m going to say.’
