Florence Pugh has discussed the online bullying she has been subjected to since embarking on a romance with actor Zach Braff.
The actress, 25, who has been dating the 46-year-old since 2019, has frequently had to deal with trolls on her Instagram who have taken offence to their age gap.
And the Black Widow star has noted that people seem bothered by her relationship with the former Scrubs star because he is ‘not who they expected her to be with’.
She told The Sunday Times: ‘It’s so weird to me to go on to someone’s page and sh*t on it.
‘That’s so not my nature — to go and bully for the sake of bullying. It’s such an odd thing that we’ve become OK with in the past 10 years of social media. The thing is, people want Instagram to be a nicer place, they want to see nice things. They want to be inspired and they want to be happy. I don’t mind you not liking me, that’s absolutely fine. In which case don’t follow me.’
Speaking about the anger people apparently feel, she admitted that people would love to see her dating someone like her Little Women co-star Timothée Chalamet, 25
‘I think it bugs people that it’s not who they expected,’ she told the publication.
The Midsommar star added: ‘But it’s my life, and I’m not doing anything to please people or to make it a better headline or story. I want to also be a person.’
This isn’t the first time Florence has spoken out about the criticism she has faced for dating Zach.
She was bombarded with hateful messages while innocently wishing Zach a happy birthday on Instagram.
Calling followers out for ‘bullying someone on my page’, Florence went on: ‘I will not allow that behaviour on my page, I’m not about that. It makes me upset, it makes me sad that during this time when we really all need to be together, we need to be supporting one another.
‘We need to be loving one another, the world is aching and the world is dying and a few of you have decided to bully for no reason.
‘I’m 24 years old, I have been working since I was 17-years-old, I have been earning money since I was 17-years-old, I became an adult when I was 18-years-old, and I started paying taxes when I was 18-years-old, I underline this fact, I am 24-years-old.
‘I do not need you tell me who I should and should not love, and I would never in my life ever tell anyone who they can and cannot love.’
Meanwhile, Zac applauded Florence’s public defence of their romance in an interview with Mr Porter’s digital magazine last year.
‘She literally sat down, hit record on her phone and said that.
‘I thought: how could I possibly follow anything as intelligent and articulate as that? So, I chose not to.’
