Gemma Collins has hit back at claims she spent £700 on a steak – she actually spent £1,450 on it.
The 40-year-old was one of the stars to nab a reservation at internet sensation Salt Bae’s new restaurant in Knightsbride, Nusr-Et London, and brought her boyfriend Rami Hawash on a swanky date night.
However, she wasn’t expecting it to be as swanky as it was, as she spent over a grand on the restaurant’s signature Golden Giant Tomahawk – a tomahawk steak coated in 24 carat gold leaf.
Gemma said she felt ‘sick’ the morning after spending £1,450 – which would get you 454 Big Macs at McDonalds – on the steak, which was cut up at her table by the Turkish restaurateur, real name Nusret Gokce.
Speaking on The Gemma Collins Podcast, the former Towie star said: ‘I have to give the ambience of the restaurant, the experience of the restaurant, a 10 out of 10.
‘The bill was another situation. I was in utter shock. But you know what, you have to weigh these things up, and the press reported that my steak cost £700, if only they knew. I wish it cost £700. It actually cost £1,450.
‘I went a bit over the top, but the only way I can justify it was that I haven’t been on holiday this year, I went on a staycation, so we sort of had maybe all our holidays in one that evening. It was kind of something I’ve never done before, I would never spend that money, but listen, we had an amazing time.
‘Yes, we had 24 carat gold steak… and then my friend, I tell her the next day because I feel so bad, then I told my mum, she was like, “the poor cow, don’t do that again.” I felt a bit sick. It was an amazing experience, I would have paid that to meet him anyway because I love him, and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.
‘But I started to feel really bad the next day because oh my gosh, there’s people starving in the world. I just started feeling really bad about it all. I told all my friends and family that we won’t be eating out for a long time, not at those prices.’
One of Gemma’s friends has since informed her that gold leaf is readily available on the internet, so she’s going to recreate Salt Bae’s recipes at home on a budget.
She said: ‘I love Rami’s steaks the most and I’m going to treat him and me to some gold foil off the internet for £4.99.’
Nusr-Et London opened last month, and the bills being racked up by diners have gone viral on social media.
In addition to the Golden Giant Tomahawk, golden burgers cost £100, two prawn tempura rolls cost £30, a Coca-Cola is priced at £9, and a Red Bull will set you back £11.
A former butcher, luxury steakhouse owner Salt Bae went viral in 2017 for his theatrical cutting of steaks, followed by his signature sprinkling of salt.
The London restaurant is his 15th venue worldwide, with Nusr-Ets located in Istanbul, New York, Dubai and Doha, amongst other cities.
