Hilaria Baldwin apologises for not being clear about not actually being Spanish

Hilaria Baldwin has apologised over the scandal around her alleged Spanish heritage, saying she should have been clearer.

At the end of 2020, the TV personality and wife of Alec Baldwin was accused of faking being Spanish, following a Twitter thread which exposed inconsistencies in her heritage.

This included Hilaria claiming she was born in Majorca when she was in fact born in Boston, switching between Spanish and English accents, and that her actual birth name was Hilary.

It was all very surreal, with the 37-year-old, who is usually very active on social media, taking a break from Instagram.

However, Hilaria has returned to Instagram, and while she stopped short of apologising for misleading people about her heritage, she said she was ‘sorry’ for the confusion.

She posted a picture of her, her husband Alec and their five children – Carmen, seven, Rafael, five, Leonardo, four, Romeo, two and six-month-old Eduardo – lying on the floor, and explained that she had been ‘reflecting and listening’ in lockdown.

Hilaria wrote: ‘I’ve spent the last month listening, reflecting, and asking myself how I can learn and grow.

‘My parents raised my brother and me with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both. The way I’ve spoken about myself and my deep connection to two cultures could have been better explained – I should have been more clear and I’m sorry.

‘I’m proud of the way I was raised, and we’re raising our children to share the same love and respect for both. Being vulnerable and pushing ourselves to learn and grow is what we’ve built our community on, and I hope to get back to the supportive and kind environment we’ve built together.’

Hilaria turned the comments off on her post.

The mum-of-five previously addressed the drama in an interview with the New York Times, blaming the now-infamous clip of her apparently not knowing the English word for cucumber on a ‘brain fart’.

Hilaria, who married 30 Rock star Alec in 2012, explained that she was born in Boston, and returned to Spain every year with her family after first visiting as a baby.

Her parents David L Thomas Jr and Dr Kathyrn Hayward, retired to Spain in 2011, and her brother Jeremy also moved there.

Hilaria and Alec are now raising their children – who were given Spanish names inspired by people in their mother’s life – as bilingual.

While the internet tore Hilaria to shreds for her apparent fakery, Salma Hayek recently said that the grift didn’t bother her.

The Mexican actress, who starred on 30 Rock alongside Alec, told Andy Cohen: ‘Oh my God. That is crazy. Like, you know what, because a lot of my friends ask me, “Oh, did you hear about this? Oh my God ….” We all lie a little bit. She makes my friend happy.

‘She’s good, she fooled me because she’s such a good mother, she has five of them. And you know, I don’t care. She, I’m sorry. I know I don’t mean to betray or hurt anybody’s feelings. And I don’t know if it’s right or if it’s wrong and I don’t, I’m not gonna judge somebody just because of that one thing.

’I feel honoured that somebody wants to be, their alter ego is to be like something that is similar to my roots. It makes me feel proud that people are inspired because you know, I am Mexican Lebanese, but my grandparents, my ancestors on my mother’s side are Spanish. I think she’s smart to want to be Spanish. We’re cool.’
