Home Alone: Is this the real reason why Kevin McCallister was left behind?

No matter how many times you watch Home Alone the idea of leaving a child behind and not realising until you are sat on the plane, after it’s taking off, is pretty mind-blowing.

Who just forgets a child? Well, Kate and Peter McCallister do in the iconic Christmas movie that is now 30 years old and fans think they have sussed why Kevin really gets left behind.

Most people presume it’s because a neighbour is accidentally included in the headcount when the parents are rounding up their brood ahead of their trip to Paris, but there’s also a much more obvious clue.

At the beginning of Home Alone, when Peter is cleaning up after Kevin and his brother Buzz end up having a fight over pizza, he accidentally throws out Kevin’s plane ticket too.

The ticket is seen gathered up with the rubbish in the bin in a blink and you’ll miss it moment at the beginning of the film – but, it makes sense why Kevin’s parents don’t think twice when checking in at the airport as all (present) tickets are accounted for.

Still, it’s a clue that is often missed – even on your third or fourth watch (we’re guilty too) – and fans are now freaking out on Twitter after realising the tell-tale sign has been there all along.

‘Who knew that in home alone Kevin’s plane ticket accidentally gets thrown on the bin at the beginning of the film. Hence the reason there’s no spare tickets and they dont realise hes missing!!! Mind blown!!! (sic),’ tweeted one fan.

‘Bruh they threw away Kevin’s plane ticket in the first home alone !!?! How did I miss that,’ said another.

After seeing the moment the ticket is thrown away shared on Instagram, one fan posted: ‘just seen this on insta and can’t believe i’ve never clocked it??? in the first home alone movie where they spill the drinks over the table in the scrap with buzz and kevin, his plane ticket gets put in the bin by accident and that’s why he gets left at home. mad.’

‘I have seen Home Alone probably 1 billion times, but was today years old when I realized they threw out Kevin’s plane ticket during the pizza debacle and that’s why no one figured out he was gone earlier at, like, the airport,’ said one fan.

While another baffled viewer tweeted: ‘I was yesterday years old when I found out a plane ticket got thrown in the garbage when they were cleaning the spills after Kevin and Buzz’s fight.’

Us too, pal. Us too.

Home Alone first came out in 1990 and stars a young Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, while Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara plays his mum Kate and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern star as legendary burglars Harry and Marv.

While the original film is arguably the best one, Home Alone did go on to have a few sequels, with talks of a reboot now doing the rounds.

However, the movie’s director Chris Columbus isn’t so keen on Home Alone being redone, with the filmmaker insisting it would be a ‘waste of time’.

‘It’s a waste of time as far as I’m concerned. What’s the point?’ he told Insider.

Columbus continued: ‘It’s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film — a live-action version of that. What’s the point? It’s been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.’

To be fair, he may have a point…
