Homer Simpson made his big catwalk debut over the weekend in a move we didn’t see coming since Zoolander dropped Magnum.
In the collaboration going gangbusters, The Simpsons went all farshun as Homer and Marge walked the catwalk for Balenciaga at Paris Fashion Week and, well, aren’t we gobbling it up.
There have been some intriguing collaborations over the years, but this might take the cake.
Coiffed punters, suited and booted in all their finest sat down to see the latest from the label’s creative director Demna Gvasalia, but were also treated to a 10-minute episode of Matt Groening’s animated icons strutting their stuff in an apparent send-up of the pomp of the fashion world.
Melding two worlds, being the satirical and mass-market series with the very non-mass-market world of high fashion, the 10-minute bit began with Homer scoping out a Balenciaga (or is it ‘Balenciagaga’?) gown for Marge’s birthday, after asking for the cheapest thing with a logo on it.
After a tearful Marge – who has always been a fan of high fashion, to the point she re-purposed a Chanel suit several times over – is forced to return the couture, the ‘style-deprived’ family is invited to Paris, alongside their fellow Springfield mates, to walk the SS22 runway in front of the likes of Simpson-fied Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, as well as Anna Wintour.
In a hilarious nod to the reality star’s Met Gala outfit, Kim – or who we assume is Kim – was seen in a head-to-toe red suit, which covered her face, with a lengthy red ponytail cascading over her shoulder as she reunited with a similarly covered Kanye.
The episode was seemingly a send-up of the fashion industry, as it took the mick out of Balenciaga’s bold shoulder pads as Marge got stuck in a doorway, as well as the sheer inaccessibility of buying such a look with Homer’s everyman reaction to the €19,000 (£16k) price tag seeing him heave.
Honestly, these are some shorts you don’t want to eat.
Despite the message of so-called ‘real people’ being involved in the show, the clip had Balengiaga trolling itself among the wider industry, as Homer also took to wearing a single dangling earring and looking overtly serious in a puffa jacket, while those seated around Vogue boss Wintour fawned over her love of Homer on the runway.
Kim was a fan herself, as she shared a screenshot of her animated moment on Instagram and wrote: ‘Balenciaga show was lit.’
We now await for someone to discover the Simpsons predicted their runway debut in a previous episode…
