Iggy Azalea has revealed she once tried to buy the movie rights to classic film Muriel’s Wedding because she wanted to produce a remake.
The 1994 Australian movie stars Toni Collette as Muriel, a socially awkward girl whose dream is to move away from her dead-end hometown and have a big glamorous wedding.
It saw Collette nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy at the Golden Globe awards, following its release, and it’s since been turned into a musical for stage.
A huge fan of the movie, Iggy, who hails from Sydney, wanted to snap up the film’s rights to recreate it.
She even went as far as talking to the movie’s writer and director P.J Hogan, who politely declined her offer because he doesn’t ever want to see a Muriel’s Wedding reboot.
Appearing on Trixie Mattel’s YouTube channel, Iggy was asked if she’d ever seen Muriel’s Wedding and she replied: ‘Of course, are you kidding? Funny story, I tried to get the rights to [the film] so that I could remake it.’
The Fancy hit-maker explained: ‘Not with me in it, just wanting to produce it and I spoke to the writer and everything. It’s his baby and he was like, “if I was going to let anyone do it, I would honestly let you do it, but I just can’t let anybody recreate it because it’s so perfect.”‘
‘And I’m like, “you know what, I’m not even mad,”‘ Iggy said.
Iggy even shared a rare anecdote about her son, who she welcomed with Playboi Carti at the end of April, earlier this year.
She is usually pretty private when it comes to her personal life, but did reveal on Instagram that her baby boy is called Onyx.
Iggy even said that little Onyx was born without eyebrows, as she covered her own brows in make-up alongside US drag queen Trixie.
She joked: ‘I had to wait for them to grow, I was waiting for months, I didn’t know if he was happy or sad. I couldn’t tell if he liked me until recently, but now I’m sure of his emotions.’
Iggy hadn’t publicly revealed her pregnancy and decided not to comment on reports revealing she was expecting.
When fans later quizzed Iggy on where her ‘pregnancy photoshoot’ was so they could see her baby bump, the star had the best response and hit back on Twitter: ‘My dog ate my homework.’
She had addressed son Onyx’s birth on Instagram and explained that she decided against sharing her pregnancy as it had made her feel ‘anxious’.
Iggy said: ‘I have a son. I kept waiting for the right time to say something but it feels like the more time passes, the more I realise I’m always going to feel anxious to share news that giant with the world.
‘I want to keep his life private but wanted to make it clear he is not a secret & I love him beyond words.’
Iggy and her rapper boyfriend Playboi Carti (real name Jordan Terrell Carter) first began dating in 2018.
