James Charles has shared how the current hate directed towards TikTok star Charli D’Amelio ‘doesn’t sit right with him’.

Charli, 16, has been at the centre of death threats following a YouTube video this week, titled Dinner With the D’Amelios, in which the teen star was accused of being rude to her personal chef and lamenting the fact she’s not yet hit 100million followers on social media yet.

Chef Aaron May prepared the dinner for the group, with beauty guru Charles joining Charli’s family for the meal, however, some viewers felt the D’Amelio sisters, Charli and Dixie, were ‘disrespectful’ when they reacted to some parts of the multi-course meal.

It was reported Charli had lost nearly 1million followers after fans deemed her behavior ‘rude’ and ‘privileged’, causing a social media pile-on no one deserves.

Reacting to the hate in an Instagram Live, Charli later broke down in tears as she stated: ‘Blatantly disrespecting the fact that I’m still a human is not okay.’

However, James, 21, jumped in to defend the star amid the intense backlash on social media.

The beauty influencer wrote overnight: ‘This charli situation is NOT sitting right with me… 100M followers in one year & y’all expect her to know how to be a perfect role model?

‘Death threats because she’s a picky eater & made a joke about a milestone? 30+ year olds dragging someone half their age? feels familiar.’

James has personally dealt with the same kind of public backlash and ‘cancelling’ when he lost 3million followers following the controversy with fellow beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook in 2019.

Charli had earlier addressed the palaver, insisting she knows she’s a good person.

She wrote on Twitter: ‘Tomorrow I will be back posting normal content with a smile on my face!

‘At the end of the day, I know I am a good person with a good heart and I will never change that about myself. I love you all!!’

In the YouTube video, which also had the sisters’ parents Marc and Heidi as guests, Charli, who has about 98.5 million followers on TikTok, reflected on how, as the one-year anniversary of her reaching a million followers was approaching, she would love to reach the milestone 100million.

She said: ‘Ugh, I wish I had, like, more time, because imagine if I hit 100 mil a year after hitting a mil.’

James cheekily asked whether 95 million was ‘not enough’, to which Charli laughed: ‘Well, I was just, like, saying, like, even numbers.’

In her Instagram she later clarified her comments, saying: ‘When I had said about the followers thing, I genuinely just thought it would be so cool to hit a huge, huge milestone a year after hitting another milestone.

‘I never meant for you guys to make it seem like you were numbers or did not mean anything.’

Still, while she may have lost followers on TikTok, according to Buzzfeed she’s gained them on other platforms.

According to reports, she’d amassed 85,000 more followers on Instagram and 21,000 on Twitter – plus 20,000 new subscribers on YouTube.
