Jimmy Carr has opened up at length about fatherhood for the first time, recalling the ‘terrifying’ birth.

The comedian has kept his family life incredibly private but recently revealed that he has a two-year-old son, Rockefeller, with his partner Karoline Copping.

Asked why he’s more willing to chat about his son now, Jimmy explained: ‘We just wanted a bit of time to adjust to it ourselves.’

The comedian spoke to Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe on their podcast Parenting Hell, explaining that Rockefeller was born prematurely.

‘It was a terrifying morning because it was an emergency C-section,’ he recalled of the birth. ‘And when they “emergency,” then you sort of take the guy to one side and go, “What do you mean, emergency? What’s the worst case scenario?”

‘And then they explain. Like, oh no that is legit frightening. We were very well taken care of, it was great. I don’t mind the gore and the guts of the thing so I was sort of in the business end as they sliced her open.

‘It was unbelievable.’

‘I took a week off touring, which I’ll be billing the kid for,’ he quipped.

Despite the scary beginnings, it seems Jimmy has taken to fatherhood like a pro, with the comedian explaining he ‘adores’ it.

The 49-year-old, whose mother died when he was in his 20s and who doesn’t speak to his father, said: ‘I went into it with my eyes open. I absolutely adore it.’

‘I like who I am when I’m with him,’ he continued. ‘I like being fully engaged. The lockdown thing was a blessing but I’m around more than most dads get to be.’

Elsewhere, the star opened up on his son’s unique name, saying he’s always loved surnames as first names, and revealed the little one has never seen TV.

Jimmy spoke out about his son for the first time this year after being pictured pushing around a pram.

The 8 Out of 10 Cats star told the Radio Times that the toddler is named after John D Rockefeller, the Standard Oil magnate, richest person in modern history and wealthiest American of all time, although added: ’Also with a hint of Chris Rock, the greatest ever comedian.’

Speaking about being a dad for the first time, Jimmy joked that so far, he hasn’t been softened by his son, saying: ‘It could be a bit of a gear shift, because of the kind of comedy I do. But so far, I’m still telling the same jokes, I’ve got the same sense of humour.

‘We’ll see, because I’m sure I’m going to be writing a lot of material about him. In fact, I think he might be tax-deductible.’

Jimmy and Channel 5 commissioning editor Karoline have been together since 2002 after meeting on a panel show.
