John Cleese has been criticised for joking he identifies as a ‘Cambodian police woman’, while discussing JK Rowling’s stance on trans rights.

In September, the Monty Python star added his name to a letter of ‘solidarity’ with JK Rowling, who has expressed views on transgender people deemed by many as transphobic, and said he was ‘proud to be in the distinguished company of Ian McEwan, Andrew Davies, Frances Welch, Lionel Shriver, Ben Miller, Tom Stoppard, Frances Barber, Griff Rhys-Jones and Matthew d’Ancona’.

While being questioned about his support for Rowling, the 81-year-old said he was more concerned with other issues like corruption than ‘trans folks’.

After one person shared a screenshot of Cleese’s support for Rowling, a tweet to Cleese read: ‘Why the f*** can’t you just let people be who they want to be? Do you actually think there is some deep conspiracy to turn people “against their genders”? Or do you like her as a person and therefore there isn’t anything she can do wrong? Latter probably…’

The comedian tweeted: ‘Deep down, I want to be a Cambodian police woman. Is that allowed, or am I being unrealistic?’

The post received much criticism, with one person replying: ‘You’re obviously welcome to your opinions. However, you have to understand this statement is deeply unkind and will alienate a lot of people who I imagine loved you and your work.’

Journalist Katelyn Burns also tweeted: ‘Katelyn Burns If I were John Cleese, I’d simply wish to be relevant.’

Cleese continued: ‘I’m afraid I’m not that interested in trans folks. I just hope they’re happy and that people treat them kindly.

‘Right now I’m more focussed on threats to democracy in America, the rampant corruption in the UK, the appalling British Press, the revelations about police brutality…Covid19, the incompetence of the British government, China’s complete disregard for the necessity to abandon fossil fuels, the developments in France between Macron and Islamicists, diabetes, and the recent deaths of several of my close friends.

‘Does than sound hard-hearted?’

One response read: ‘Everyone across the world is dealing with circumstances that are beyond the pale or out of the ordinary right now, but if we lose our sympathy and support for those that are maligned by many people in society, where does that leave us?’, to which Cleese replied: ‘Oh I do sympathy and support all the time, for most of the Third world. Except for Glasgow, of course.

‘I exclude all wokes, of course. I hope they fry in their own sanctimoniousness and narcissistic posturing. Until they get a sense of perspective, that is…’

He later said that his understanding of the situation was ‘superficial’, but tweeted: ‘One thing: When a woman who was once a man is competing against women who have always been women, I think she has an advantage, because she inherited a man’s body, which is usually bigger and stronger than a woman’s.

‘Does that prove phobia?’

Cleese has shown support on social media for Rowling, previously saying he was ‘baffled’ by the criticism of the Harry Potter author.

Earlier this year, the 55-year-old argued that same-sex attraction and the reality of women are erased if ‘sex isn’t real’, and claimed that there is a conflict between the ‘radical trans movement and women’s rights’.

Rowling has since handed back a human rights award after having her views questioned.
