Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Cynthia Erivo join cast of live-action remake of Pinocchio

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Cynthia Erivo are the latest stars to sign up for the live-action remake of Disney’s Pinocchio.

Cynthia is set to play the Blue Fairy while Joseph will voice the iconic character of Jiminy Cricket alongside Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the title character Pinocchio.

The all-star cast also includes Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Keegan-Michael Key as the voice of Honest John, while Lorraine Bracco will play new character Sofia the Seagull.

The film, which is being directed by Robert Zemeckis, has been in the works since 2018 and will combine live-action and heavy visual effects.

Pinocchio is due to start production this month in the UK and will be released straight to Disney Plus rather than cinemas thought the date it actually drops is yet to be announced.

It’s not the only movie Disney are planning to send straight to streaming as Peter Pan & Wendy and the long-awaited Enchanted sequel will also go to the subscription platform over a theatrical release.

Pinocchio is the second major project announced for Cynthia Erivo this week, after the London-born star signed up for eight ‘feminist fables’ from the creators of Glow.

The series, called Roar, was picked up by Apple TV+ and will also star Nicole Kidman, Alison Brie and the Walking Dead’s Merritt Wever.

The two-time Oscar nominee will also play Aretha Franklin in the upcoming anthology series Genius.

The 34-year-old shared photos of her in character for the role in January, telling fans: ‘Today is my birthday and I couldn’t be prouder of the chance to tell the story of the Queen of Soul.

‘She sang the songs for the feelings our hearts couldn’t find the words for. She told stories with the melodies she weaved and was unafraid to speak truth to power.’
