Kate Ferdinand made sure to fire back at one fan who slammed her for calling Rio Ferdinand’s children her own.
The former Towie star, 29, is married to Rio, 41, who is dad to three kids he shares with his late wife Rebecca Ellison; sons Lorenz, 14, and Tate, 12, and daughter Tia, nine.
Rebecca died following a short battle with breast cancer aged 34 in 2015.
Rio has since moved on with Kate, who is pregnant with the couple’s first child, and she has been extremely open about her journey to becoming a step-mother over the last few years.
Kate had shared a snap from a recent family break away of her swimming in the sea to Instagram, telling her followers: ‘One of my favourite days of this year, out at sea with the family …. no worries, happy & stress free ?? ? #specialmemories.’
However, she found herself forced to defend her family life with Rio, when one follower criticised her for calling Rio’s kids her ‘family’.
They commented: ‘Ooof. Rebeccas family. I’m all for stepmoms etc. and you’ve stepped into a massive hole. But those kids are Rebeccas. And they’ll not thank you for saying otherwise xx.
‘Apart from that you are a lovely lovely girl. But, those wedding letters to “your” kids was terrible. Imagine if you were her looking down or her mum n dad… not cool (sic).’
Kate responded to the ‘narrow minded’ follower and stated it was ‘sad’ they couldn’t understand why she, Rio and his kids are a family.
She fired back: ‘Wow. Very very narrow minded. Rebecca is their mum & forever will be. A mother can never be replaced. But let me clarify WE ARE family, families aren’t just about blood, but who is there for us and loves us unconditionally.
‘Please think before you speak, are all foster and adopted children family less?! Of course not. Family is about love and choosing to be there for one another.’
‘We are family by CHOICE,’ she insisted. ‘It’s so sad you don’t understand, let’s hope you never have to go through such heartache to get it.’
Kate and Rio began dating in 2017 and he proposed with the help of his kids the following year during a family trip to Abu Dhabi. They then tied the knot in Turkey in September 2019, where Rio’s children had a special part to play in the ceremony.
Tia had been Kate’s maid of honour, while Lorenz and Tate had walked her down the aisle.
Throughout her relationship with Rio, Kate has been open about her journey to becoming a step-mother, with her and Rio being praised by fans for a documentary they filmed on the subject earlier this year.
In the doc, Kate candidly spoke of the struggles she faced adapting to fit into Rio’s family, while he confessed that he never really listened to her or understood how she was feeling because he was ‘so locked into his own grief’.
The pair credited the show for saving their relationship and bringing them closer together.
