Kate Garraway admits Christmas was ‘challenging’ as house floods and fridge breaks

Kate Garraway has admitted that getting through Christmas was a ‘challenge’.

The Good Morning Britain presenter has had a difficult 2020, after her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised due to coronavirus.

The 53-year-old has now reflected on her ‘calamitous’ Christmas, saying she struggled to get a food delivery and had to deal with burst pipes in her home.

Kate and her kids Darcey and Billy also suffered TV and wifi outages, and they were left without a fridge and freezer.

Sharing a picture of her Christmas tree on Instagram, Kate wrote: ‘Well here we are folks – #newyearseve – the last day of a year few will be sorry to see the back of.

‘Have been quiet for a while – getting through Christmas has been a challenge hasn’t it with all the emotions it stirs in our strange world & no where really to put them – except in hope. And there is still so much real hope out there. Not just in the extraordinary health care workers & researchers who definitely hold a bright light for the future. But in all the little kindnesses.

‘We had a calamitous few days in the run up to Christmas – but we got through thanks to some wonderful people. The guys from @bondconstruction who literally got on their hands & knees with me to bucket out water after we had 2 pipe leaks that flooded our home.

‘@emmawillisofficial & @marksandspencer who made sure we had #gorgeousfood for our Christmas dinner when I couldn’t get a delivery slot anywhere & the guys from @britishgas who spent hours on the phone helping me to get a fridge & freezer to put the food in. The guys from @skyhelp who talked me through getting our WiFi & tv working on Xmas eve.

‘Your kindness & spirit is overwhelming . And all @itv & @global for their constant support.

‘Sending love & virtual hugs to all of you who have sent messages – spreading the love is what will give us all a truly happy new year.’

Followers left heart emojis and their best wishes under the post, with many hoping that Kate will be reunited with Derek in the new year.

Derek, 53, is one of the longest Covid-19 patients in intensive care, having been admitted to hospital with the virus in March.

While Derek spoke for the first time in over 200 days last month, after being placed in a medically-induced coma, Kate said she was ‘physically sick’ thinking about Christmas without her husband.

She said on GMB: ‘I’m finding it really challenging, I know it’s the slightly unique position I’m in but it’s also not…

‘Obviously my dream is for the children and I to see Derek on Christmas Day in some way. The practical challenges with that is we have to keep really safe in order to be able to visit him and isolate. Also, it’s a question of if we are doing that, can we have my mum and dad there?

‘I want to try and avoid, if at all possible, just Darcey, Billy and I on Christmas Day because I think that would make Derek’s absence feel huge and the rest of the family’s absence feel huge. It’s quite a difficult balance to work it all out.’

It is unclear whether Kate got to visit her husband on Christmas Day.
