Kate Garraway reveals the new tier 4 rules have plunged her Christmas plans into further chaos as she is now unsure if she can form a bubble with husband Derek Draper in hospital.
The Good Morning Britain presenter considered self-isolating with her children Darcey and Billy so they would be allowed to visit Derek on Christmas Day.
Derek, 53, has been in hospital since March after being admitted with coronavirus and is said to be the UK’s longest case of Covid-19. He is currently free of the virus and in a ‘state of minimal consciousness’.
However, it’s uncertain whether she will be allowed to see him in hospital after Boris Johnson announced strict tier 4 rules on Saturday stating people in London should not leave home on Christmas Day and until December 30.
Kate’s GMB co-host Charlotte Hawkins tweeted after the devastating announcement: ‘Just when we thought this year couldn’t get any worse…. #christmasiscancelled.’
A concerned follower replied: ‘I truly hope in all of this @kategarraway & her children gets to form a bubble and to see Derek. It’s hard for all of us, but harder for her as her situation is unique. Ella-Rose will keep you busy I’m sure.’
Kate, 53, saw the thoughtful comment and replied: ‘I hope so too Fatimah – not quite clear at the moment but thank you for thinking of me and the others in the same situation xxx.’
The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star returned to GMB last week after two weeks off where she was forced to isolate due to one of her children coming into contact with someone else who had tested positive for coronavirus.
During the episode, Kate explained that she was undecided about her Christmas plans as she also wanted Derek’s parents to see him.
Sharing her predicament, the presenter said: ‘I’m finding it really challenging, I know it’s the slightly unique position I’m in but it’s also not…
‘Obviously my dream is for the children and I to see Derek on Christmas Day in some way. The practical challenges with that is we have to keep really safe in order to be able to visit him and isolate. Also, it’s a question of if we are doing that, can we have my mum and dad there?
Later, Kate met some of the nurses who cared for Derek when he was first rushed to hospital, while also revealing how the heartbreaking situation has brought their family closer together.
