Former Big Brother star Kate Lawler has said she is scared and upset about the prospect of giving birth alone in hospital, with the UK hit with another national lockdown.
Last night Prime Minister Boris Johnson plunged the nation into a third lockdown, closing all non-essential shops as well as schools, while also ordering everyone to stay at home to protect the NHS.
Sharing a video to her Instagram Stories overnight, Kate revealed she’d been crying over the news and was nervous about giving birth without her partner Martin in six weeks’ time.
She said: ‘I think I should invest in some waterproof mascara, don’t you? I’ve been crying, that’s why I look like death.
‘I’ve just got off the phone to my obstetrician, we were talking about the birth and my birth has been booked in for six weeks today.
‘But because Covid cases are on the rise, there’s a chance that Boj [Martin] might not be able to come to hospital with me.’
Adding that she has a ‘huge fear of childbirth’, Kate went on: ‘I might have to go it alone, so first of all my heart goes out to any woman who had to give birth without her partner there.
‘As someone who has a huge fear of childbirth, the idea of giving birth to my baby alone without the person I love there holding my hand is just terrifying.
‘It’s just not for me, it’s not what I want so of course I’m upset but there’s nothing we can do.’
NHS guidance currently states having a birth partner present is allowed as long as they do not have symptoms of Covid-19 (and advises having a ‘backup birth partner’ should your main one test positive for coronavirus).
However, it goes on to add there ‘may be limits’ on the amount of time the person is allowed to stay for following the birth.
The 40-year-old radio DJ – who shot to fame in 2002 when she won the third series of ‘Big Brother’ – revealed last September that she and Martin were expecting their first child together, and she later revealed they are to have a girl.
Posting a video on Instagram, with Beyoncé’s absolutely banger Run The World (Girls) playing in the background, Kate wrote: ‘My long term plan to assume total control over the household is nearly complete (Just kidding). We are both delighted to share with you all, that we are having a little girl. Happy Sunday everyone. (sic)’
Kate shared the news she was expecting last year, and admitted she had ‘never felt more ready’ to welcome a child.
She added: ‘For a lot of my life I did feel pressured and I wasn’t ready. You have to do what’s right for you. I think I am going to be a much happier person knowing that I did this when I wanted to.’
