Katy Perry has been criticised for promoting her father’s non-partisan t-shirts in a ‘tone-deaf’ social media post.

The 36-year-old has previously discussed her differences with her parents, who are conservative and born again Christians.

However, the popstar was keen to promote the company Nothing But American, founded by her father Keith Hudson and brother David, which called for a end to the ‘division destroying America’.

In a social media video, Keith, a Pentecostal preacher, said: ‘Are you tired of the division that is destroying our country? Are you sick of losing your family and friends because they just don’t agree with your political views? Well, I am.’

Proclaiming ‘At the end of the day we are all Americans’, Keith’s t-shirt featured the symbols for the Republican and Democrat parties, with a ticked box next to the American flag.

Keith is selling the t-shirts for $19.99 (£14) and hoodies for $29.99 (£22), while another t-shirt slogan reads: ‘Not a Republican, Not a Democrat, I am an American.’

Katy shared the video and wrote: ‘We haven’t always seen [eye] to [eye] but I’m proud of my dad n bro for coming up with this!

‘Head to @NothingButUSA  store for the vibes.’

While some people applauded the store, others slammed Katy for promoting the t-shirts, calling the message ‘tone-deaf’ and comparing it to Donald Trump.

Director Jake Wilson tweeted: ‘KATY C’MON NOW. WHAT. How did anyone let you do this’, while a fan replied: ‘Wanting unity in a country is a beautiful thing Katy, but when the policies & tactics of a political party have affected your life in a negative way simply bc of your race/ethnicity it’s not simple to “put it aside”, please see this and try to understand the other side queen.’

Katy’s friend and activist Markus Molinari also spoke up, commenting: ‘I’m sorry, I LOVE YOU but this is a HUGE NO for me! It’s not a political issue. It’s “straight” up a human rights issue.

‘“Why are we continuing to allow systemic racism to exist and continue to justify the oppression of a single group for more than 400 years? Everyone deserves the right to be able to jog, drive a car, cash a check, or sleep in their own bed without fear of a death sentence because of the color of their skin. The Trump Administration’s decision to reverse the Obama-era rule that encompasses gender identity in the sex definition of the Affordable Care Act is an act of discrimination and purposeful inequality. This is about human respect, and right now we need to take a good look at ourselves and ask who we are becoming if we are justifying or advocating against the barest rights imaginable..”

‘“It’s NOT right” to just cover it up with a T-Shirt.’

Katy – who recently welcomed her first child with Orlando Bloom – supported Joe Biden in the US presidential election, but said that she immediately reached out to her conservative family after the result was called.

The Firework singer tweeted: ‘The first thing I did when the presidency was called is text and call my family members who do not agree and tell them I love them and am here for them.’

Katy previously said she ‘didn’t have a childhood’ growing up with her deeply religious parents, with the phrase ‘devilled eggs’ even banned in their house.

When the star hit the charts with her single I Kissed A Girl, her parents publicly condemned the song, with her mother Mary saying: ‘I hate the song. It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting.

‘Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family and she knows how disappointed her father and I are. I can’t even listen to that song. The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.’

However, Keith and Mary have accompanied their daughter to a number of award shows in the past.
