Kelly Clarkson has revealed that she was once mistaken for Carrie Underwood, and even ending up singing an autograph as the country singer.

The Since U Been Gone hitmaker was taking part in a game during a segment on her chat show The Kelly Clarkson Show, alongside guests Michelle Buteau and Cheryl Hines.

During the game, they had to describe what they would do if they were mistaken for another person, with Kelly later making the confession.

She recalled: ‘This girl came up to me and was like, “Oh my God, your song So Small is one of my favourites”. And I kept thinking, “I don’t have a song So Small.”

‘And then she said another song and I was like, “Oh, you think I’m Carrie Underwood.” And I literally look nothing like Carrie Underwood.’

The fan then proceeded to ask Kelly to sign an autograph for her, and the singer happily obliged – instead signing under the name Carrie.

Kelly continued: ‘I was so embarrassed for her that I just… She was like, “Can you sign this?” And I totally signed “Carrie Underwood.”

‘I think that might be illegal!’

And it seems this wasn’t the first that Kelly, 38, has been mistaken for Carrie.

Speaking on Elvis Duran And The Morning Show in 2016, she said: ‘People come up to me all the time. Okay, we look nothing alike, we sound nothing alike, there’s nothing about us that’s similar, really, except we were both on [American] Idol.

‘People are always like, “I love your song So Small” and I’m like, “Thank you. Thank you, I think you’re thinking I’m Carrie Underwood”. It always happens!’

In the past, many had even suggested there was a rivalry between the former American Idol winners, but Kelly dispelled these rumours during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2018, after the two stars were pictured together at the Radio Disney Music Awards that year.

She told the publication: ‘Everybody always tries to pit me and Carrie against each other. So, when I saw her I was like, “You know what? Let’s just end this right now and get a picture together because we are never in the same place.”

‘And like, it never happens. And people always try to put it together like we’re enemies. And I’m like, “We don’t even know each other well enough to be enemies.”

‘So anyway, I went to get a picture and then everybody lost their mind.’
