Kerry Katona has opened up on her substance abuse, revealing she nearly died after excessively using cocaine.
The 40-year-old has openly discussed her public struggles with drugs over the years, having famously lost her contract with supermarket chain Iceland in 2009 after being pictured snorting cocaine.
The former Atomic Kitten star has now revealed that she had near-death experiences while taking the drug, but believes guardian angels kept her alive.
Kerry, who is currently appearing on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Win, told new! magazine: ‘The amount of coke I was once doing, I literally died. I remember coming back [from the brink of death] with these beautiful figures around me and I felt so much love – that happened to me twice.
‘I’d stopped breathing. So I know I have angels looking out for me. You can knock me down but you can’t keep me down.’
Kerry previously admitted to ‘snorting cocaine like it was going out of fashion’ during her second marriage to Mark Croft, who she split from in 2011 after four years.
In a past interview with The Sun, Kerry said: ‘I took so much coke with Mark and I had hoped he’d try to stop me, and go, “I love you too much to see you do this”, but he never did.
‘I would take so much that I’d have a fit and start frothing at the mouth and I really hoped I wouldn’t wake up.’
During this period, she lost her lucrative Iceland contract.
The mother-of-five said her turning point came when she spent two weeks at a boot camp and returned to tell Mark that she wanted a divorce – saying that she never used cocaine again after that experience.
On Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, Kerry has been forced to face up to her demons amidst the gruelling physical challenges and intense interrogation by Ant Middleton and his team.
The star admitted that being shouted at during the drills triggered memories of her abusive marriage to third husband George Kay.
Kay – the father of Kerry’s seven-year-old daughter Dylan-Jorge – died in 2019 after suffering a seizure when he bit into a ‘ball’ of cocaine during a binge at a Holiday Inn.
On the show, Kerry discussed her ‘anger’ at her ex’s death, after having to tell her daughter that her dad had died.
She said: ‘When George died there were so many mixed emotions. I was so angry. How f***ing dare you die? Putting me and the kids through all that s**t, and then you just die.
‘The worst conversation I had to have was with my five-year-old to tell her her daddy had died. I had to explain that to a baby. As t**t as he was, he was still her dad.’
Kerry is also mum to Molly, 20, and Lilly-Sue, 18, with first husband Brian McFadden, and Heidi, 14, and Maxwell, 13, with ex Mark.
