Kristen Stewart is set to play Princess Diana in new movie Spencer and opening up about taking on the iconic role, she says she ‘feels protective’ over the beloved royal.

Spencer is due to start production in January and it’s reported the film will centre around three pivotal days in Diana’s life during the early 90s.

It will see her spend Christmas at Sandringham Estate, as she realises her marriage to Prince Charles is on the rocks and begins to re-evaluate her life.

While the movie won’t show Diana’s tragic death in 1997, it will see her as a mother to Prince William and Prince Harry and her trying to come to terms with deciding to leave the royal family for good.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kristen addressed the pressure that comes with playing Diana onscreen.

‘It makes me stand to attention in the best way,’ she revealed, as she said of Diana: ‘It’s hard not to feel protective over her. I feel sort of the same way about her.’

Kristen explained: ‘I didn’t grow up with [Diana] maybe in the same way, I was really young when she passed away. I remember the flowers… She was so young.’

On the challenges that come with playing Diana, Kristen said that she’s very aware her portrayal might not please everyone.

‘Everyone’s perspective is different and there’s no way to get anything right because what is fact in relation to personal experience? My movie takes place over three days and it’s this really poetic, internal imagining of what that might have felt like, rather than giving new information,’ she said.

‘We don’t have a mark to hit, we just also love her.’

Kristen previously revealed that she has been working with a dialect coach to perfect Diana’s accent, which she has described as ‘intimidating as hell’.

The Twilight star joked to Jimmy that lately she’s been ‘falling asleep’ listening to Diana’s voice in order to get it stuck in her head.

The release date for Spencer is still yet to be confirmed and the movie is set to be directed by Pablo Larraín.

Larraín has said in the lead-up to production starting that he is confident Kristen can do Diana justice onscreen, as he praised her as a ‘strong lead’ for the film.

The filmmaker told Deadline: ‘To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things and she can be very mysterious, and very fragile, and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need.’

He said: ‘As a filmmaker when you have someone who can hold such a weight – dramatic and narrative weight, just with her eyes – then you have the strong lead who can deliver what we are looking for.’
