Lady Gaga will sing the US national anthem at Joe Biden’s inauguration

Lady Gaga will sing the US national anthem at Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s inauguration.

It has been confirmed by the Biden-Harris inaugural committee, via Variety, that Gaga will sing The Star Spangled Banner at the US Capitol on January 20 at the swearing-in ceremony.

Jennifer Lopez will also perform at the inauguration, while it was confirmed that firefighter Andrea Hall will lead in the Pledge of Allegiance; Amanda Gorman, the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate, will recite a poem; and Father Leo O’Donovan and Reverend Dr Silvester Beaman, both friends of the Biden family, will deliver an invocation and a benediction.

Gaga supported Biden in the presidential election, and after the election was called for the Democratic nominee, the Shallow singer tweeted: ‘Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and the American people, you just gave the world one of the greatest acts of kindness and bravery humanity has ever seen…

‘Nothing but love for our new Commander in Chief and the 1ST female VP elected to the White House. Also, way to go PA.’

The 34-year-old, real name Stefani Germanotta, appeared at a drive-in rally in Pittsburgh ahead of the election, urging people to vote for Biden.

Before Biden ran for president, Gaga teamed up with the former Vice President for a PSA about sexual assault on behalf of itsonus.org.

The singer called Biden ‘my buddy’, while the President-Elect tweeted: ‘Honored to work with a woman of great courage, my friend Lady Gaga. With her leadership, and your help, we can change the culture.’

Ahead of President Donald Trump being impeached, the popstar had called for his impeachment, rather than the 25th amendment being invoked for Mike Pence to take charge for the remainder of Trump’s presidency.

She tweeted last week: ‘I hope we focus to impeach Trump so Congress has the constitutional authority to possibly disqualify him from future election — the #25thAmendment doesn’t disqualify him.’

As well as having the pro-Biden credentials, Gaga also has form in performing the national anthem in front of huge crowds, having sang The Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl in 2016.

At the Trump-Pence inauguration in January 2017, Jackie Evancho sang the national anthem at the swearing-in ceremony.

Other stars to have received the honour include Beyonce, who sang the national anthem at Barack Obama’s second inauguration.
