Leigh-Anne Pinnock has called for Black love to be ‘celebrated more’, as she believes so much ‘positivity’ can come from it being represented onscreen and in the media.
The Little Mix star, 29, opened up on her own relationship with footballer Andre Gray, who she got engaged to over lockdown, and said that she loves that they both have a ‘mutual understanding’.
Speaking on Bumble’s My Love Is… podcast as part of their #MyLoveIsBlackLove campaign, Leigh-Anne opened up on why the representation of Black couples is important to her.
While doing so, she revealed that sharing ‘common ground’ and the same cultural experiences with Andre has strengthened their relationship.
Leigh-Anne said: ‘I love that me and Andre have a mutual understanding. I’ve experience things being “the Black girl” in a group and I felt comfort in the fact that Andre just understood everything.
‘The common ground we have together… I don’t think I could have done it other way.’
Andre joined his wife-to-be Leigh-Anne on the podcast, adding: ‘You can have that conversation with each other and with someone who will get it and understand it.
‘So, when we’re in the situation that we have been for so many years, at least you can come home to someone and actually have a conversation where they really completely understand the way you feel… to have that is strong.’
Leigh-Anne called for there to be better representation of Black couples going forward, as she said: ‘I definitely don’t think there’s enough.’
‘There is so much positivity that comes from Black love and actually seeing it on our screen and in the media – and there’s so much work to do with that,’ she said.
‘It’s definitely not celebrated enough. There’s just something so powerful about a Black couple.’
Leigh-Anne and Andre also reminisced on how they met in Marbella four years ago, with Andre revealing his popstar girlfriend had actually made the first move and approached him.
Fast forward to 2020 and Andre finally popped the question, with Leigh-Anne saying her beau ‘absolutely smashed it’.
He had set up a movie night at home, with the film being interrupted with photos and videos of the couple, before the words ‘will you marry me?’ popped up onscreen and Andre was next to Leigh-Anne down on one knee.
Leigh-Anne confirmed their engagement on Instagram and wrote: ‘Guys.. wtf has just happened… ??? He bloody did it, and I said yes ? I’m marrying my soul mate, the man of my flipping dreams…
‘I am lost for words, so I think I’m just going to go cry some more ?? @andregray_ I love you so much ??❤️ My world is literally complete ❤️.’
