Love Island star Demi Jones has revealed how she pushed to get a lump on her neck checked after sadly witnessing her father’s own cancer battle.

The 22-year-old reality star recently had surgery to remove a lump on her neck which doctors said was ‘potentially cancerous’.

As she awaits the results from the operation, Demi has opened up about when she discovered the lump and how her father’s past experience spurred her on to take action.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk to celebrate the launch of her stunning Missguided collection, Demi recalled: ‘I actually noticed the lump in January 2019. It was my third year at uni and it was while I was writing my dissertation and exams so that just engulfed my life.

‘Then six months later once I’d finished and had my degree, I mentioned it to my mum and she went into panic mode and was like, “What the hell? Why haven’t you said anything?” Went straight to the doctors and apparently it’s very common – 1 in 3 women have a thyroid nodule but they said it looks good, we’re sure it’ll be fine.’

Demi was scouted for the winter series of Love Island and entered the villa in January 2020.

From there, she recalled that it ‘all happened so quickly’ but noticed that it had grown bigger over the past year.

‘So I just knew I had to push to get it seen again,’ Demi said.

She added: ‘When you’re a young girl you’re more worried about boys and going out with your friends than checking for lumps and bumps, but it’s only because it’s something prominent on my neck that I knew it was an issue and unfortunately my dad had a lump and he developed cancer so I knew you need to keep a check on these things.’

Demi now has to wait two weeks to receive the biopsy results and if not cancerous, she can simply heal from the scar. However, if it is cancerous, she may have to undergo a thyroidectomy again to remove the gland and possibly radiation.

The reality star has been blown away by the support she’s received since documenting her surgery and hopes to encourage other young women to check themselves regularly.

She explained: ‘The main reason I put it on my socials is to raise awareness and I had thousands of messages, my phone blew up and I had loads of girls reaching out to me, loads of people saying they were booking appointments because of me and I even had fellow celebrities message me saying they were worried about certain lumps and looking for advice so I just feel like it’s done a world of good.’

Sharing her words of advice, Demi encouraged: ‘Pause TikTok, pause Netflix, just take five minutes and have a little feel. If you don’t know how to do it, Google it, there are some really amazing websites.

‘If there’s anything that concerns you, don’t let nerves get the better of you and put it off because I feel people actually put it off because they’re nervous to find out what it is.

‘Don’t let doctors brush you off, you know your body and if you know something’s wrong, push to get more appointments and to get referred if you need to.’

Aside from her health concerns, Demi is thrilled with the launch of her first collection with Missguided, out today.

Inspired by hot summer evenings in Cuba’s capital, the Havana Edit features vibrant hues and striking prints from dresses and two pieces to tops and swimwear.

In other words, Demi just wants you to live out your Hot Girl Summer dreams – wearing her pieces, of course.

Sharing her excitement for the collaboration, Demi said: ‘It’s my favourite brand and I’ve been buying from them since I was younger. Since I was 14, 15 years old.

‘It’s so weird how I used to buy their clothes to go out clubbing with my girls when I was younger and now I’m making dresses for girls to go clubbing! It’s a weird full circle but I’m so happy and honoured that Missguided have taken me on.’

Praising the brand’s inclusivity, Demi continued: ‘Our sizes range from 4-26 so it’s so inclusive and I feel like Missguided as a brand are all about diversity. You only have to go on their socials and website to see how inclusive they are with their sizes, race, everything. They’re just amazing.

‘It was really important for me as well that now lockdown’s lifting, everyone’s felt a bit grotty, I just want everyone to feel good and step out in this collection over summer and feel their best selves.’

The full Havana Edit by Demi Jones is available in sizes 4-26 from £8-£35 and available on missguided.co.uk.
