Mariah Carey has been announced as the inspiration behind McDonald’s new meal deals, and fans are, quite rightly, bemused.
The fast-food chain took to Twitter to announce its new menu, which includes deals for 12 days in December, but the way they shared the news was slightly odd, to say the least.
McDonald’s posted a bizarre photo mash-up of Mariah in a slim red dress, walking out of the ocean with a smile, with the company’s iconic sign sticking up out of the water behind her.
‘Mariah’s back for the holiday season and this time, she’s bringing a whole menu with her,’ the caption read.
In an additional tweet, the company wrote: ‘Introducing the Mariah menu.
‘Get free daily deals w/ $1 min purchase dec. 13 – 24, only in the app, dahlings’.
The reaction has been one of overwhelming confusion, from the bizarre photograph to the fact that Hero hitmaker and superstar singing icon Mariah has partnered with McDonald’s in the first place.
‘What the f*** is this picture’, one person wrote on social media.
‘Is this real life bro what’, another added, while one said: ‘I can’t f***ing breathe who edited this’.
One emotional Twitter user said ‘this photo is a mess i’m cryingggg’ while another said ‘this literally looks like a meme LMAO’ – gaining almost 20,000 likes in the process.
Mariah herself also announced the partnership with a clear, and very normal, YouTube video, inviting everyone to ‘try my menu at McDonalds’.
Which is all well and good, but at the same time, which announcement went viral?
And, in fact, the food giant’s barmy mash-up may not actually be as senseless as it first appears.
One Twitter user pointed out that it is likely taking off a popular meme that tends to do the rounds every January as the Christmas season comes to an end.
The meme shows Mariah walking into the ocean, with the words: ‘It’s that sad time of year when Mariah Carey must return to the ocean, only to re-emerge next Christmas’.
The All I Want For Christmas Is You singer has been busy since emerging from the ocean this year: as her Christmas classic is already creeping up the charts, she’s also released a brand new song that will battle it out on the charts.
New track Fall In Love At Christmas was released earlier this month, and features Khalid and Kirk Franklin.
The singer suffered an almighty blunder when announcing the new song on Twitter, when she accidentally tagged the wrong Khalid and sent 20 million fans to the profile of a man in India whose only tweet, sent in 2012, was ‘Wats up’.
