Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet is one happy man, after announcing his engagement to Lindsay Schweitzer.

Eric, 49, popped the question to his girlfriend of five years with a stunning diamond ring and confirmed the news on Instagram with a trio of snaps.

In the first, the actor emotionally held Lindsay’s hand, while in the next, he gazed adoringly at the paediatric nurse.

By photo three, Eric was playing up for the cameras, with his jaw dropping as he pointed at Lindsay’s new bling.

He captioned the post: ‘She said, “She’d have her people call my people.”’

Eric’s celebrity friends congratulated the couple in the comments, with Gwyneth Paltrow writing on behalf of her and husband Brad Falchuk: ‘YAY!!! We are so happy for you.’

Zachary Levi wrote: ‘Congrats duuuuuuuuuuude!!!’, while Michael Buble added: ‘Congrats you beautiful couple you.’

Eric even got offers to help out on the wedding day, with make-up artist to the stars Bobbi Brown writing: ‘So awesome. I’ll be there to get the bride ready. And the groom.’

Eric – who played Cam on Modern Family – had been looking for love on dating apps prior to meeting his bride-to-be, telling Ellen DeGeneres in 2016: ‘Now I’ve done Bumble, and I’ve tried this other one, and the way I justify it, Ellen, is because I’m on TV, I shouldn’t be eliminated from participating in what’s going on in the world.’

However, later that year, he met Lindsay at a charity event in Kansas City, and their romance was first reported the following year.

He addressed their relationship in another interview with Ellen in 2016, with the host saying: ‘Your girlfriend is lovely — I met her backstage. She’s a nurse. That’s a good thing for you, because you’re a hypochondriac.’

Eric said: ‘I’m a big baby, too. She calms me — she calms my nerves. I’m a very high-strung person. You can tell, right?’

The actor was previously in a relationship with Katherine Tokarz before they split in 2012; this will be his first marriage.

Eric has joked in the past that he is ‘openly straight’, having achieved global fame playing a gay character.

He joined the cast of Modern Family in 2009, playing Cam, who is married to Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and won two Emmys for the role.

The award-winning sitcom wrapped last year.

Eric is also known for roles in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, American Horror Story and The Secret Life of Pets films, in which he voices Duke.
