Netflix has cancelled Halle Berry’s sci-fi drama The Mothership due to difficulties, including difficulty with reshoots for the young performers.
The Mothership, a sci-fi film, finished production in 2021 and was supposed to be released on Netflix, but after several delays, the company has opted to cancel the project entirely.
While filming was still going on, post-production discovered that considerable reshoots were required, notably for the kid actors. But so much time had gone that one of the kid actors had gotten much older, making it impossible.
Halle appeared in The Mothership alongside Molly Parker, John Ortiz, Omari Hardwick, Paul Guilfoyle, and Sydney Lemmon, as well as a number of younger performers.
Colin O’Brien, 14, who previously appeared in Wonka and Mr Harrigan’s Phone, portrayed Martin, while Spirit Halloween actor Jaiden J Smith, aged 15, played Halle’s character’s kid, Jake.
The kid actors would have been between the ages of 11 and 12 when filming began, but one had matured significantly by the time reshoots were completed, according to The InSneider.
The Mothership recounted the story of mother Sara, played by Halle, who is mourning her husband’s untimely departure. A year later, Sarah and her children uncover an alien item beneath their property and think it will help them find the missing guy.
Netflix’s decision to terminate the film will undoubtedly disappoint fans, but it is not the first time a distributor has cancelled production on a movie after filming has completed.
Warner Bros. has cancelled three projects that had completed production in recent years: Batgirl, Coyote versus Acme, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt.
Halle is likely to continue working with Netflix, having inked a multi-picture agreement with the business in 2021 following her sports thriller Bruised, which she directed and starred in.
She is now working on the action film The Union, which will release on Netflix.
Following the release of Bruised, she praised the Netflix CEOs, stating that she believed the company would handle it ‘with great care.’
‘The Netflix team has not only been collaborative and creative, but extremely passionate and a delight to work with. I am beyond grateful for the partnership and look forward to telling more stories together.’
