Nicole Kidman has confessed she was surprised to learn Hugh Grant had signed up to co-star alongside her in new thriller series The Undoing, as she said her long-time friend is work-averse.
Nicole stars alongside Hugh in the HBO miniseries about a wealthy New York City couple whose idyllic lives are turned upside-down after a fancy school fundraiser goes horribly wrong.
Nicole, 53, plays therapist Grace, and Grant, 60, stars as her husband Jonathan.
The Big Little Lies star told The Graham Norton Show that her relationship with Hugh outside the show made it easy to slip into the role of husband and wife.
She said: ‘We’ve known each other since our early 20s. We’re friends and our paths have crossed, so it was very apropos to be playing a husband and wife that have been married for 10 years because we sort of have that demeanour together.
‘I’ve always wanted to work with him, and I have always been a big fan. When the director suggested him, I thought he would never do it because he is famous for not wanting to work.
‘He says he doesn’t like working but he is so good when he does – he is amazing.’
But Nicole couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at her co-star, adding: ‘He has a lot of children now who he has to support!’
Love Actually and Paddington 2 star Hugh is dad to five children, all born after he turned 50. He shares three with his wife, Swedish television producer Anna Eberstein, and two with ex Tinglan Hong.
Mum-of-four Nicole, who won an Oscar for The Hours in 2003, said filming The Undoing was challenging (spoiler alert!), especially one emotionally-supercharged scene she had just minutes to perfect.
And while Moulin Rouge clearly proved the star had singing chops, she was more reluctant about lending her vocals to The Undoing.
As Nicole tells it, director Susanne Bier really didn’t give her a choice but to sing the miniseries’ theme song, a cover of the sleepy standard Dream a Little Dream of Me.
She said: ‘The only reason I did it is because the director said I had to, and I’m a very obedient actor!’
The Graham Norton Show airs on Friday at 10.45pm on BBC One, and is also available on iPlayer.
The Undoing airs weekly on Mondays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic & NOW TV.
