‘I was selfish and only thinking about myself’: Phillip Schofield ‘didn’t realise’ his coming out as gay would help others

Phillip Schofield has recalled the moment he decided to publicly come out as gay on national television and admits, at the time, he ‘didn’t realise’ the impact it would have on others struggling with their sexuality.

In February, the presenter, 58, came out on This Morning in an interview with his co-host Holly Willoughby, after sharing a statement opening up about his sexuality to Instagram.

But, Phillip, who has been married to wife Steph Lowe since 1993, admits he had felt ‘selfish’ at the time and had no idea that by revealing he is gay so publicly would help others who found themselves in a similar situation.

Appearing on Virgin Radio’s breakfast show with Chris Evans, Phil was asked: ‘Were you aware, when your thumb was hovering over the send button, that the Instagram post would also save lives?’

‘No,’ he responded. ‘It was only after that I realised. Because my head probably got very, very selfish. I thought a lot about me.’

Phil continued: ‘I got lost very much in the darkness of my own head, so I didn’t think about the wider consequences. I was concerned for my family, I was concerned for the job. How will people see me? Are they going to look at me differently?’

‘Actually last night someone messaged me,’ he revealed. ‘They said, “you saved my life and you made it okay.”‘

The TV star has since said he wants to be as ‘honest’ as he can about the struggle he went through and has admitted it took him to some ‘dark’ places, where he had considered taking his own life.

Phil insisted that talking about how he was feeling ‘saved his life’.

Host Chris then recalled seeing Phil amid his inner battle and came over emotional, as he claimed he ‘didn’t recognise’ the star after her lost a lot of weight.

‘I didn’t recognise you. And Holly gave me a look and I thought, “something’s going on here,” you looked like a little old man, because there was nothing of you.’

Phil, who has said he is ‘still pretty confused’ after coming out, replied: ‘You disappear inside yourself and that’s when you’re lost. All you’re doing is thinking about whatever it is that’s on your mind.

‘I say you have to talk, even if you’re not a talker, even if it’s not something that you do. If you are in trouble you can’t do it on your own and it will eat you up. That was what saved me – talking out loud.’

Phil has repeatedly praised his wife Steph, who he shares two daughters with; Molly, 27, and Ruby, 24, for standing by him and being a huge support.

During his initial TV interview, earlier this year, Phil said: ‘I have had to deal with this in my head for quite some time and as for Steph, as I said I can’t write in any statement how I feel about that woman.

‘She is incredible, there is no one in my life that would have supported me in the way she has. She is astonishing.’
