Leo Sayer has stated he’s been forced to cancel UK events owing to being ‘extremely sick’.
The 75-year-old musician stated he was hospitalised in Australia due to a number of medical issues.
In a message sent on Sunday, the More Than I Can Say crooner, who was a musical phenomenon in the 1970s, apologised to fans and said that he had been ill for three weeks.
Sayer wrote on Facebook: ‘I haven’t posted anything publicly about this before but I couldn’t fly or make the recent shows in the UK as I became very ill just before the trip.
‘I have been in hospital here for the last 3 weeks in Australia with kidney, bladder and prostrate complications.’
He went on: ‘It all happened at the last moment, so it was too late to warn anyone. Many thanks to Butlins and Tony Denton for making replacement arrangements for these shows.
‘I’m so sorry to have disappointed my fans but these things can happen to us 75 year olds!’
Concluding his post, Sayer said he’s doing well and is hoping to be back on stage in the new year.
‘I’m still in hospital now but well on the mend. I will take a necessary short break from activities and be back fighting for shows in 2024 – particularly my UK and Ireland tour next autumn,’ shared Sayer, who has been an Australian resident since 2009.
‘Thank you everyone for all your concerns and good wishes.’
Sayer, who was born in West Sussex, was a chart fixture in the 1970s, with six top 10 albums and a slew of hit songs to his name.
You Make Me Want To Dance is undoubtedly his most renowned disco classic, while Sayer’s most recent number one was in 2006 with DJ Meck’s remix of Thunder In My Heart.
His most recent album was released in 2019.
Sayer released Selfie on Demon Records that year, an album he recorded at home in Queensland with his wife Donatella Piccinetti.
Sayer and Piccinetti married in a private ceremony earlier this year.
The wedding was characterised as’very secret’ and only featured an elite handful of guests in a statement released on Facebook by his management team.
‘After being partners for almost 39 years, Donatella Piccinetti and Leo Sayer got married in their garden in the Southern Highlands on Saturday, April 15.’
The statement, warmly received by Leo’s biggest fans, continued: ‘It was a very private ceremony where the couple were joined by 40 of their closest friends.’
‘The weather was sunny, the bride was radiant, the groom looked handsome and they couldn’t be happier with how the day went,’ it concluded.
