A record number of stem cell donors have signed up after being moved by Ashley Cain’s plea for fans to do amid his baby daughter’s leukaemia battle.
The Ex On The Beach star welcomed his first child, daughter Azaylia, with his girlfriend in August.
He revealed a month after her birth that Azaylia had been diagnosed with a ‘rare and aggressive’ form of cancer known as AML (acute myeloid leukaemia) and the three-month-old is currently hospitalised and undergoing treatment.
Following rounds of chemotherapy, doctors have now said Azaylia is in need of a bone marrow treatment. Ashley broke down in tears as he revealed the news on social media and begged fans to register as donors in his search to find a donor for his baby girl.
He has joined forces with Anthony Nolan, a blood cancer charity that recruits those aged 16-30 to join the stem cell register, and within 48 hours, a record number of people have signed up to become stem cell donors.
Following Ashley’s plea on Friday, 41,000 people registered in two days, compared to the charity’s usual sign up rate of 100 per day.
Ashley had explained that it will be that more difficult to find a potential match for Azaylia due to her mixed ethnicity of Caribbean, Burmese, Indian and English.
‘You know your own child and we knew she wasn’t well,’ Ashley said of his daughter’s diagnosis. ‘She has a rare and aggressive form leukaemia that’s made even rarer by her being only eight-weeks-old when she was diagnosed.’
He explained: ‘She has tumours on her lungs, stomach and kidneys. Finding out that your baby has a serious and life-threatening illness is something no parent in the world should have to go through.

So the doctors told us today that no matter how well Azaylia’s chemotherapy and recovery goes she will need a bone marrow transplant. Her case is very rare and aggressive and made even rarer by her age. As well as that, because of her ethnic mix (Caribbean/Burmese/Indian/English) its extremely difficult to find a match for her bone marrow. . The bone marrow transplant it is a very long and gruelling process of intense chemotherapy, stem cell treatments, transfusions etc and there are many high risk complications. I can’t lie it’s a crushing blow as she’s in the high risk category and this process is incredibly enduring on her little body. But as always we’re keeping things positive and as long as she’s got a fighting chance… WE WILL FIGHT! ???❤️ #LetsGoChamp
‘It was the single most upsetting, terrifying and heartbreaking experience we have ever been through. Something that is not only incomprehensible, but it also has a devastating impact on our physical and mental health.’
Ashley continued: ‘It’s out of Azaylia’s hands now, she’s almost climbed this mountain, but she now needs someone else’s hand to help her get to the top. She can’t do this on her own, she needs a donor.’
Anthony Nolan is also appealing for financial support, as a cost of £40 is required for each donor to be registered.
Reality star Ashley had previously told fans: ‘The bone marrow transplant it is a very long and gruelling process of intense chemotherapy, stem cell treatments, transfusions etc and there are many high risk complications.
