Shirley Ballas has revealed her heartbreak over not being able to see her son this Christmas after two years apart due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Strictly Come Dancing judge has shared a photo with Dancing With The Stars pro Mark – who she had with her second husband Corky Ballas – and admitted that while they talk everyday, she misses being able to give him a hug.

She tweeted: ‘Missing my boy so much @MarkBallas we talk daily but I miss those hugs, Now with the new variant who knows when Mark and I will see eachother again over two years and no hug.

‘My heart hurts for everyone who can not see their loved ones due to this awful pandemic. Sad.’

Her fans responded to the post with sympathetic messages, with many of her followers opening up about their own similar experiences.

‘Bless. I know exactly how you feel,’ one fan wrote. ‘My daughter lives in New Zealand and haven’t had a hug for 3 years.’

Another added: ‘I know that feeling Shirley I haven’t seen my eldest son for almost 2years we speak most days but I also miss hugs off him here is a big hug from me to you xx (sic)’

And a different follower said: ‘Totally relate to this, by the time we see our son it will be 4 years. Used to take it for granted we could just get on a plane to visit’.

This Christmas will also be the first since Shirley’s father George Andrew Rich died ‘suddenly’ in April aged 83.

She wrote on Instagram at the time: ‘With sadness and a heavy heart my father George Andrew Rich fondly known as Andy, has passed away suddenly. My heart goes out to his wife Liz, the love of his life who was with him for over 40 years and to all who knew him.

‘It’s hard to find the right words at this moment, my father lost two sons in his lifetime and I hope you can all find each other in the after life. So many things left unsaid, RIP Dad you will be missed but not forgotten.’

Meanwhile, Shirley joined fellow judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke for the Strictly final on Saturday night, and the next day she heaped praise on runners-up Johannes Radebe and John Whaite, and winners Rose Ayling-Rose and Pernice Giovanni.

Sharing photos with both pairs, she wrote: ‘A huge congratulations to @pernicegiovann1 @RoseAylingEllis @jojo_radebe and john. What an amazing final full of hope and promise.

‘Brilliant performances all round. Iconic, ground breaking and inspiring. To all who took part well done. I’m sad it’s over. (sic)’
