A new international trailer for The Batman dropped this week and fans think it’s hinting at an appearance from The Joker.
Warner Bros. Japan has unveiled a new preview for filmmaker Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated blockbuster – which stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and his Caped Crusader alter ego – and there are two key moments which have people wondering if the Crown Prince of Crime will be part of the action.
The most obvious comes at the end of the teaser, when a mysterious voice says, ‘I’ve been trying to reach you, Bruce Wayne’, before letting out a maniacal laugh.
Many have pointed to The Joker as the obvious source, but it could just as easily be Paul Dano’s Riddler, who features in the trailer as is known to let out a giggle or two of his own.
He warns: ‘I’m here to unmask the truth about this city.’
Still, you can never rule out the iconic villain popping up in a Batman film, and there is one more clue which is only adding to the speculation.
At one point, there’s a collage of photos which show Bruce Wayne in public, and the bottom half of an eerily sinister smiling face can be seen in the background, which is giving us definite Joker vibes.
Some fans have also compared it to a famous picture by Alex Ross, and there’s a line of thinking that this potential take on the character could be more of a stalker in the movie.
One fan tweeted: ‘Right, call me reaching, but to me, that looks like Barry Keoghan, gets me thinking that what if Joker is someone who is more like a stalker figure and he’s really watching Bruce (sic).’
Eternals star Keoghan has been cast at Gotham City police officer Stanley Markel, but there have been plenty of people wondering if he’s secretly been cast as The Joker himself, so we’ll have to wait and see.
It’s a stellar cast across the board, with Pattinson, Dano and Keoghan joined by the likes of Colin Farrell (Penguin), Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman) and Andy Serkis (Alfred).
Reflecting on what he admitted is a relatively small role, Farrell previously said: ‘I am not all over it by any means, but there are a couple of tasty scenes. I totally feel like it is something that I’ve not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun.’
The Batman is set for release on March 4, 2022.
