The Last Supper and Down on the Waterfront director Stacy Title dies aged 56

Director Stacy Title has died aged 56.

The filmmaker, who was known for her work on movies like The Last Supper, The Bye Bye Man, and Down on the Waterfront, which earned her an Oscar nomination, died on Monday due to complications associated with ALS, her manager confirmed to Variety.

Title’s husband, Jonathan Penner, also shared a photo of his late wife, writing on Twitter: ‘Stacy Beth Title 2/21/64 – 1/11/21’.

The director made her start in the industry in 1993, with her short film Down on the Waterfront. It scored her an Oscar nomination, alongside her husband, for best short film (live action), although the film lost to Pepe Danquart’s Black Rider.

Title went on to direct films like The Last Supper in 1995, which starred Cameron Diaz, Let the Devil Wear Black in 1999, and 2006’s Hood of Horror, starring Snoop Dogg.

Her final screen credits were in 2017 for directing The Bye Bye Man and in 2019 for executive producing TV series King Kong Skull Island.

In 2017, Title was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) – a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. She is survived by her husband Penner and their two children.

Tributes have been pouring in for Title, with one fan writing on Twitter: ‘Tragic. Stacy Title was an underrated talent.

‘Her film The Last Supper is one of the most prescient and insightful (not to mention funny) political satires out there.’

‘Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Stacy Title,’ another wrote. ‘She was a huge inspiration to me as a teen genre fan.

‘Once I met her I was beyond impressed by her drive & continued creative mission. Grateful I had the opportunity to tell her how much she meant to me while she was with us.’

One more added: ‘I met Stacy Title once, at a dinner, soon after Bye Bye Man came out. She seemed lovely, funny and generous. She was on the cusp of great success after years in the industry, when the disease struck, leading to a 3-year ordeal. I’m truly saddened by her passing today.’
