Vernon Kay has revealed he purposely likes to head out to the supermarket late at night so he can take advantage of all the reduced goods.
The I’m A Celebrity star, 46, who is married to wife Tess Daly, was so chuffed with his latest bargain purchases that he shared his top cash-saving tip with fans.
During his appearance on the Sweat, Snot and Tears podcast, Vernon was asked what he was having for tea and that was all it took for him to reveal his love for knock-off meat and poultry.
The TV presenter recalled his late night supermarket trip to hosts Annie O’Leary and Wendy Golledge and said: ‘Here’s a top tip, a cash saving tip.
‘I got there just as they were putting the reduced labels on some of the meat and poultry items. Whatever we have for tea tonight will probably be out of date today, but I got it at a bargain price,’ a smug Vernon revealed.
Laughing at the idea that a trip to the supermarket has become the equivalent of a ‘spa day’ in lockdown, Vernon said: ‘I know! That is such a good analogy, it really is. It bloody is.’
He then diverted attention back to his late night supermarket steals and said: ‘I got a rib-eye steak… a massive rib-eye steak – Tess doesn’t eat red meat and the girls don’t eat much so for me, a rib-eye is a treat – and I literally got it for a third off face value because it went out of date today, so they had to sell it yesterday.’
Well, he definitely may be on to something.
Vernon also opened up about his time on I’m A Celebrity – where he was among the stars that took part in the show’s first ever UK-based series last year.
I’m A Celeb ditched the Australian jungle for a Welsh castle due to Covid-19 travel restrictions and Vernon finally agreed to sign up, after being put off by hosts Ant and Dec for years.
The pair told Vernon he would hate it and he said: ‘I knew [it would be hard] because I’m quite good friends with Ant and Dec. We play golf on a regular basis.
‘In previous years they’ve said, “Oh, it’s horrific, you don’t want to do what they’re doing.”‘
After he signed up, Vernon revealed that Dec was the first person he told and the show host warned him that he knew what would be coming.
‘I phoned Dec and he said, “Just go in and enjoy it. You know what’s coming, there’s cockroaches, there’s horrific things, but just go in and enjoy it,”‘ Vernon recalled.
He added: ‘I’m quite competitive. I don’t like walking away from a challenge and not feeling like I gave 100 per cent and that’s the attitude I went in there with.’
