Tommy Cannon pens sweet tribute for ‘best buddy’ Bobby Ball’s birthday: ‘Have a scotch up there for me’

Tommy Cannon has penned a tribute for his ‘best buddy’ Bobby Ball, on what would have been the star’s 77th birthday.

The iconic comic died in October last year, at the age of 76, from coronavirus, with his comedy partner sharing a sweet photo of the pair of them.

Tommy, 82, wrote on Twitter: ‘It would of been my best buddy’s 77th birthday today… miss you mate, have a scotch up there for me [sic].’

Fans have been quick to support the star, with one writing: ‘Wishing you well Tommy, always remembering Bobby and the joy you both bring!’ and another adding: ‘Thinking of you Tommy and the family. Happy birthday Bobby, we are missing you loads.’

Ball died in hospital last year, after he tested positive for Covid-19.

His manager confirmed the sad news, saying: ‘His wife Yvonne said the hospital and staff could not have been more wonderful, as they were outstanding in their care of duty and they did everything possible for him and she cannot praise them enough.

‘She said that the family and Tommy would like to express their sincere thanks to the many, many people who have been fans of Bobby and they know that they will all share in part the great loss and total sadness that Yvonne, the family and Tommy all feel.’

Tommy later penned his own statement, simply writing: ‘Rock on, my good friend, I can’t believe this, I’m devastated.’

The comedy duo first met in the 1960s while working in a welding factory, forming a partnership soon afterwards and landing their own TV show, which ran from 1979 to 1991.

Speaking to The Independent about their bond in 2006, Tommy explained: ‘We’ve got a very close relationship, like brothers. My wife often listens to me and Bob, and doesn’t know what we’re talking about. We’ve known each other for 45 years.’

He continued: ‘We’re on equal terms, nobody is stronger than the other. I sometimes feel I need to step in and take care of him, but I don’t really; he can take care of himself.

‘After so long together, you can’t sum it up in words. We’ve been through trials and tribulations – I’ve helped him and he’s helped me. I hope we remain together for the rest of our lives.’
