Vanessa Kirby has revealed the intense measures she went to while researching her next movie role – including watching a woman go through six hours of labour.

The actress, 32, who stars in Pieces Of A Woman, revealed she watched a live birth as part of her preparation for her role as Martha Weiss, as the movie starts with a 30-minute labour scene.

Vanessa told Harper’s Bazaar that she eased herself in at first: ‘I started watching everything I could find. Endless documentaries, home birth videos, but everything was so sanitized; everything was so edited.’

Not content with watching the edited versions of giving birth, Vanessa wanted to witness it first-hand and shadowed an obstetrician to watch a live labour.

She explained: ‘I watched her for six hours go through a really difficult labour, no painkillers, forceps. It got really, really difficult…

‘I watched her go on a completely lone journey, like an odyssey, through the most primal, almost divine… And I saw the power and the fear in all of it.

‘I came away far more of a woman in appreciating the sacredness of the feminine in a way that I don’t think I had fully realized. I feel like I had lived something in human experience I hadn’t lived before.’

Vanessa admits she was moved by what she witnessed, adding: ‘It brought everything that I sort of had known intellectually into being, which is, this is like the magnificence of being a woman, and its creation essentially… It almost gave birth to the film inside my heart.’

Pieces Of A Woman is due for release in selected theatres on December 30, and will then be released digitally on Netflix from January 7, 2021.
